Sing with a Broadway vocal coach & voice therapist!

With extensive experience working 1-on-1 with Broadway singers, middle and high school singers, and avocational singers, Ellen loves teaching every level. Whether you want to explore the basics of singing or grow your current technique, your lessons will reinforce why we do what we do to achieve good singing sound. That understanding of what is the only way you can build truly good technique! In each lesson, you'll be up and around using your body to engage necessary muscles and release tightness and overwork in muscles that try to help out with singing but aren't helpful. You won't feel like you're in science class - unless you want to :) - but you will be taught using evidence-based methods, drawing upon what science has taught us to be true about how vocal cords work. Ellen will also dispel a lot of myths about voice use and voice care and teach you the real facts, for example: belting is NOT actually "bad"; Throat Coat tea does NOT "help your vocal cords" but it DOES help your voice; you do NOT need to avoid drinking cold or hot liquids when singing - there are so many myths!

    About Ellen L.

Ellen is a proud "voice nerd" who loves everything about working with both speaking and singing voices. She has a unique combination of professional experiences: - as a clinical voice therapist in NYC, helping everyone from classroom teachers to C-level executives to college professors to Broadway performers produce their healthiest and therefore best-sounding vocal qualities in speech, singing, or both - as classroom teacher and educational theatre program designer and director - as a Production Vocal Coach on Broadway plays and musicals This combination of professional experiences allows Ellen to make the shyest young singer, the busy executive or professor, and the active professional performer equally comfortable and feeling as if they are being maximally productive in their sessions while still enjoying them. Ellen worked with the original Broadway cast of Matilda the Musical as one of two assistant Production Vocal Coaches for both speech and singing, was the sole Production Vocal Coach for the multi-Tony nominated Broadway play Hand to God, where her job largely involved facilitating safe screaming (!), and has worked 1-on-1 with performers from the Broadway casts of The Crucible, Mean Girls, Wicked, Book of Mormon, School of Rock, Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story, and many others. Ellen founded the training company Musical Theatre College Auditions, for whom she still coaches, and is a nationally-recognized expert in the singing aspect of musical theatre college auditions. Ellen has an M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology with a clinical specialization in voice therapy and voice care and a Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). She has 15 years of clinical voice therapy experience working alongside laryngologists (vocal fold specialist ENTs). Ellen is also a certified secondary classroom teacher (grades 7-12) and has happily spent 30 years as a musical theatre vocal coach at every level from pre-K shows to actual Broadway productions and education theatre director. Ellen is a highly experienced, expert teacher of all levels of speakers and singers - no one is too new or too advanced!
