Hello! I moved to Brooklyn fifteen years ago to get my MFA at Pratt Institute; I've been a professional fine artist for my entire adult life and have shown my work extensively in and around New York. I have taught traditional oil painting at local ateliers and I also teach plein air workshops in the Hudson Valley through the Artist’s Workshop Association. In 2018 I was invited by the US Department of State to teach a series of oil painting workshops at an art college in Algiers, Algeria, because one of my paintings hangs in the Ambassador's Residence there. It was an amazing experience! I love talking about painting and drawing and demonstrating what I've learned. For more info, pics, and demonstrations, you can check out my IG (@eileen_murphy_studio) or my website (eileenmurphy.net).
For both drawing and painting, I lead my students through a series of exercises that teach the fundamentals of observation and execution. My own work is very realistic, so I have the technical skills to demonstrate to students how to reach the goals they want, whether or not they want the results to be exactly true to life. A lot of my students end up making more expressionist work which is great! And some others are interested in making very traditional paintings.
Additional note: I provide materials for beginning painters so that you don’t have to invest in paint and brushes until you know for sure that you want to continue with it. I think that makes it easier for people to get started.
I also teach small group lessons (2-3 people) so message me for that pricing if you have a few pals you want to bring with you!

Eileen has been great to work with online, therecreally are no painting teachers in my area who have the technical knowledge to help me out so I was really stuck. We only started recently but I’m learning so much faster now.
I’ve been working with Eileen online for awhile now and it’s been really great. I’ve learned so much from her techniques and her tips about my palette and brushes. I’ve learned a lot just by watching but her comments to me have really helped my painting progress much faster.+ Read More
I’m really enjoying my lessons with Eileen. Painting is hard but she’s moving me along through the steps of learning how to do it. We’ve been working together for three months and i can’t believe how much my paintings have improved.
I wanted to try something new and creative so I picked oil painting. Eileen’s lessons are fun and challenging, I feel like I’m making a lot of progress and I’ll never look at a cup and saucer the same way again! Sometimes during night lessons she even brings snacks.+ Read More
I am working on learning how to draw more realistically and Eileen has been a big help. I feel like each lesson is really carefully thought out to focus on the things I most need help with. Also I really like her studio
i used to love drawing when i was a kid and really wanted to pick it up again. I really love Eileen’s lessons, they’re challenging but also relaxing and meditative.
I love my lessons! I’m studying interior design and I thought it would help my development if I learned to draw properly. The kind of intense observation that Eileen teaches has also really helped my design projects. She’s great!
Eileen is a great teacher! We started with different exercises with still life and when I said I was also interested in the figure she came up with some really cool lessons around that, too. I love going to her studio every week.
Eileen gives my daughter lessons and she really seems to be learning a lot and enjoying them. I love the paintings that she brings home
I love going to Eileen’s studio, the building is filled with working artists and is very cool and old. She’s been teaching me a lot about how to make the paint do what I want it to do which I haven’t been able to figure out on my own.
Eileen is very clear and thorough and I find her demonstrations VERY helpful. I’ve learned a lot by watching her and I really enjoy these lessons
I do a lot of cartooning but wanted some lessons in perspective and observation to make my drawings more accurate. Eileen’s lessons were very effective and helped me reach my goals.
I’ve been taking drawing lessons with Eileen for awhile now and I really recommend them. It’s the calmest and most focused hour of my week and I’m learning a lot.
My teenage daughter is interested in drawing realistically and she wasn’t really learning that at her art class in school. She’s been doing a series of lessons with Eileen and the drawings she’s been making are wonderful! Of course I’m biased but my daughter has really been enjoying the experience.+ Read More
I’ve been wanting to learn to paint for years but it seemed like an expensive thing to get into. Eileen provides materials for beginners which is really helpful because you feel like you can experiment more without making a big commitment. Her lessons are challenging but relaxed and her paintings are awesome and inspiring!+ Read More
I drew a lot as a kid but haven’t at all in recent years. My first lessons with Eileen have been focused on simple exercises in observation. They’re challenging but really helpful and I can see improvement already! Her studio is really cool and comfortable to work in.+ Read More
I haven't picked up art supplies since high school and Eileen was such a delight and was so supportive of my pitifully lapsed skills. Her studio is everything you imagine a Brooklyn artists studio would be. Would like a little Eileen sitting on my shoulder guiding me through life, like she did through my painting lesson. 10/10 will take lessons again.+ Read More
Eileen is a great teacher with a lot of specific strategies for building a painting. She is very clear, personable and fun to work with. Her knowledge of materials and techniques can help anyone advance their skills and better understand the medium.
I really love taking painting lessons with Eileen at her studio. First of all, the studio is in an awesome old factory building and has a really cool vibe. Secondly, Eileen knows all kinds of techniques and was really good at settIng up exercises that were simple (not overwhelming or stressful) but still allowed a lot of room for me to experiment with color and brushwork.+ Read More
Eileen is an amazing teacher! I learned so much from her. She's patient, fun and a brilliant instructor. I had such a great time taking her class, and wholeheartedly recommend her to students of all experience levels.
I was a beginner and really excited to learn as much as I could about painting. Eileen started me with the very basics of setting up a palette, then we moved on to monochrome paintings, and then paintings with a full palette. She taught me the process of making a painting step by step was what I really wanted to learn. Her teaching style was a fit for me because she is both patient and skillful. She helped to bring out the artist in me. I am so grateful for what I learned and have taken that knowledge and continue to grow as an artist in my spare time. What also love is that Eileen has made herself available right me and I plan to take more lessons with her soon!+ Read More
