I have been a professional musician and cello instructor for over two decades. In that time,I have discovered that when performing it is a wonderful feeling to know that you have helped to provide some moments of joy to your audience after a concert performance. However, by providing lessons on the cello to students of various ages and backgrounds I feel that many aspiring musicians like yourself will be able to make sure others will be able to enjoy your gift of music and the sound of your cello for many years to come. Learning to play a cello, like any instrument not only develops the whole brain but also gives you tools and methods to accomplish complicated tasks in many other disciplines. For example, much of my teaching is based on a building block technique as well as teaching students how to practice the cello much more efficiently. Doing so it makes playing and working on the cello much more enjoyable. As some of my former students have gone on to become professional musicians themselves, others have gone on to pursue careers in law, medicine and engineering. I am constantly amazed of the number of former students who still keep playing through adulthood. My knowledge as a school orchestra director and a professional cellist also helps me and my students when preparing for city, state and regional youth orchestra auditions as well as solo and ensemble competitions and performances. Due to the recent pandemic my private teaching has expanded to virtual lesson offerings this last year. At this time, if you are nearby and willing, I can meet you for an outside cello lesson weather permitting. Much of my time is spent rotating between the DFW metroplex including Smith County and Wichita County in Texas, as well as Kitsap, Pierce and Jefferson counties in the state of Washington. As some may enjoy the convenience, I will still teach virtually but also look forward to meeting with ALL of my virtual cello students regardless of location.

Dwight has been absolutely wonderful to work with, and extremely accommodating. I'm an adult learner with hearing loss and had a couple of other cello instructors politely decline initiating ongoing lessons, but Dwight wasn't even phased! He's been very helpful and encouraging every step of the way, and explains nuances in a tangible way, even over video. I have especially appreciated his patience, as I cannot always hear what is wrong until it's been done right, a correction that seems twice as difficult in the age of social distancing! I have taught myself to play a number of instruments (adeptness aside), but never had as much fun or progressed as quickly, and look forward to continuing on with the cello.

Mr. Anderson has been a great influence on my life. As a cello teacher, Mr. Anderson has a wealth of knowledge ranging from the making of the cello to the history of composers to just random facts. Mr. Anderson has been my teacher from the 6th grade to my senior year. During those 6 years, he helped me grow into a great cello player that as a senior, I was able to play a solo with my school orchestra as a senior capstone. He, also, understood, that during this time, not only is his job to teach me cello but also to help and guide me into a better person. I have had many great and amazing teachers in high school and college and Mr. Anderson is among the best. I will never forget those 6 years and will fondly look back at these formative years.

Dwight Anderson was a fabulous cello teacher for my son from preschool through high school. He was, in fact, the best music teacher we ever had for either of my children - through all of their piano, violin and cello instruction. He was consistent and nurturing, able to push the boundaries of expectation, and able to inspire. Although he only taught my son, he influenced my daughter as well by encouraging them to both participate in the GDYO. He was masterful in choosing certain pieces of work that inspired my son to practice and to perform. Even though he certainly assigned scales and etudes, he always allowed him at least one piece of his choosing that gave him such a sense of accomplishment. For example, my son learned to play the prelude of the Bach suite in G even before he started the 1st grade. That is still his favorite piece! And, starting around 7th or 8th grade, he let his pick which "big work" they would tackle for the following year. We went through the Lalo cello concerto, Faure's Elegie, the Saint-Saens concerto, Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody, Dvorak's Rondo, and finally, "The Dvorak", for his senior project in high school. Even though my son didn't always learn all the movements of the concerto or learn it to perfection, Dwight's partnership with my son in picking these pieces gave him such a love of playing the cello! What a wonder and a gift! In the years since high school, Dwight has kept up with my son, even though he chose a non-music career path and a life in the north east. We will be forever grateful for Dwight and the influence he has had on my son in particular, and, for his influence on the whole family for deepening our appreciation of beautiful music. Thank you, Dwight!
