    About Doug L.

Doug has been involved with synthesizers since 1976, his first being a PAiA Gnome kit. Early influences include Tangerine Dream, Todd Rundgren, Brian Eno, David Bowie, and Isao Tomita. Since then, he has steadily worked his way up the synth food chain. He now owns a LOT of analog and digital synths and samplers by the likes of Moog, Arturia, Korg, Ensoniq, and Roland. Along the way, he has run an 8 track recording studio, was a free-lance sound engineer and house sound engineer at The Brewery in Raleigh NC, as well as played guitar, bass, and keyboards in bands. Currently, he has two solo projects. 80 lb.Test uses a variety of hardware synths and controllers, coupled with software virtual synths, to create anything from lush, ambient washes to frenetic pulsing sequences, to meandering sonic doodles. For the most part, the 80 repertoire is based on loosely structured songs. However, Doug will often wander into uncharted territory, veering dangerously close to the musical ditch. His other solo project, SumbGlitch, tends to stay in that ditch. If it's too weird for 80 lb. test to do, then SumbGlitch takes over. Expect anything from straight up Noise, to alternate controllers, to more esoteric concepts. He also plays keys and electronics in Subliminal Surge, an "Experimental Geezer Punk" band, with heavy emphasis on social satire and commentary. Doug has played at events and in venues all over the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area, all over the state of North Carolina, and in New Jersey. He is an inveterate electronics tinkerer. He would just as soon pop open a broken box as to send it off to be repaired. His top favorite artists are The Beatles, Frank Zappa, Todd Rundgren, Pink Floyd, The Tubes, and Dash Rip Rock.
