I am a violin and viola teacher born and raised in the Baltimore area. I have been teaching private lessons and group classes for the last eight years and studied both performance and pedagogy at some of the best music schools in the country. I most recently completed a Graduate Performance Diploma at Peabody Conservatory, where I also studied pedagogy under Rebecca Henry and Janet Melnicoff-Brown of the Peabody Preparatory. While the majority of my teacher training and professional work has been on the violin, I am a violist at heart. I teach students ages 3 to adult at my home studio in Mount Vernon, and I enjoy working with students who have all different levels of ability and commitment. Everyone is welcome.

Graduate studies at Peabody Conservatory and Longy School of Music.
Undergraduate studies at New England Conservatory and Tufts University.
Orchestral player with the Junge Sinfonie Berlin, Boston Philharmonic, and Annapolis Symphony, among others.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are always planned in a way that fits each student individually. I like to establish a routine that includes technique, music theory, and performing pieces. I believe that it is important to do a little of each in a lesson in order to give the students a solid foundation and foster independence.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a second floor music studio with stands and chairs and instrument maintenance equipment. The space has an additional seating area where parents can relax during the lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will always bring whatever I need in order to teach fully. I would only ask the student to have a quiet space where we could work and a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
My training has included the Suzuki, Rolland, and Sassmanhaus methods, as well as the approach used by the Peabody Preparatory, and I tend to use a blend of all of them, tailored to fit the needs of each individual student.

Great experience

She did a wonderful job teaching Tara. Tara's viola technique really improved this year thanks to Dorothy's patience and hard work. Dorothy never missed a lesson and always came prepared for the next challenge. I must admit that I was hesitant to find a teacher using an on-line service but, Ihave been extremely pleased with our instructor and will miss Dorothy's guidance in our viola lessons.

Feedback for Dorothy

Dorothy has fabulous teacher. She is easy to learn from and doesnt get anoyed when you dont get things on the first try. This is great because as an adult I dont learn as quickly. Also, I am a college student (age 20) and she works with my school and work schedules. I really cant say how pleased I am with the quality of her teaching.

First 3 weeks...

Thank you for what you have done for Mechelle so far. She enjoys coming to lessons and feels very comfortable working with you. And it's nice to know that she's getting the attention and help that she needs to be successful in learning the viola.

Great viola teacher

Dorothy has been wonderful in working with my 12 year old daughter. She has quickly corrected improper techniques and has worked with her on some new pieces of music. Having her come to our house has been wonderful for our busy family schedule.
