Fundamentals of Music Theory

Grow your beginner to intermediate flute skills!

I have been playing flute for over 30 years and teaching flute for 25 years and I love seeing beginner students grow in their playing and musicianship. I have had some students go on to play in the school band or orchestra, and even participate in competitions and play with our local community youth orchestra. With each student we begin by focusing on the basics of the flute, such as knowing the parts of the flute, how to hold the flute with good posture, making that first sound, having the correct embouchure, and some breathing techniques. Then we progress to learning basic note-reading and rhythms, while incorporating several beginner flute fingerings, then moving on to learning simple songs/pieces. I specialize in playing classical and folk style pieces, but am also open to music theater, church music, and other genres in the student's interest. I typically start in the Accent on Achievement series for flute or the Rubank flute series or a combination of the two, depending on the student's ability/level. I may also add other supplemental pieces or materials as needed. If the student plays in band at school, we may also take time to work on music for that as well, giving the student the individual attention that they may miss in a group/classroom setting. Flute lessons are also a great way to keep up with practice when school is out for holiday breaks or summer.

    About Donna W.

I have been teaching music for 25 years, both in private lesson and classroom settings. I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Shenandoah University & Conservatory and I have experience teaching all age groups, from age 3 through senior adults, and every age in between. I enjoy teaching students with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, including students with special needs. While I generally use specific curriculum materials, I can also tailor that curriculum to the individual needs of every student. I like to incorporate games, composing, and various music challenges into the lessons and I encourage my students to try to step out of their musical comfort zones and try new things. I also try to do virtual recitals once or twice a year. I enjoy seeing a student's confidence grow as they learn and be creative! Every student is capable of learning something about music and being successful at it!
