I've been using Excel in depth for over 15 years for engineering and business during undergraduate and graduate studies, respectively, and professionally. I am the guru of Excel at my place of employment. My teaching method is to always first understand what the student needs, and tailor the teaching to them. A student could simply need a better general understanding of how excel works. That would involve showing how the program is laid out and then examples of the capabilities and options. A student could come in with a spreadsheet they need help understanding. I will also gladly sign an NDA for sensitive information. I will take the student through the spreadsheet and show them how it works, and in the process show how Excel works. The other option is if a student has a bunch of data and they aren't sure how to organize, evaluate, or process it. I will help the student do that for the current set of data, and provide the tools necessary to do it on their own next time. All options include keyboard shortcuts if helpful, and ways to make a bland sea of numbers into nice tables, graphs, and charts for reporting, decision making, and presentation.

About Derek J.

Hi there!
My name is Derek and I have a broad range of interests and experience. That includes teaching. I've played and coached soccer and hockey. I'm often teaching math to one of three kids at home. I've done Ironman and trained others for triathlon. I'm a numbers guy, so that made Excel an interest to me many years ago. The hardest part about being a teacher is remembering how it feels to be the student. It is always a struggle. A great way to remember is to remain a student of other new things. Right now for me that is in learning the guitar the last few months. I'm thoroughly a student of life, and my job is to understand how you learn, then teach to that learning style.
