I specialize in teaching beginner's piano- this includes basic technique, reading notation, and music theory.

I make sure new students realize the importance of rhythm- something that in my experience many beginner's teachers gloss over in favor of teaching fingerings- a task that is simple and flows very naturally. Having a strong respect for rhythm as a beginner sets students on a very strong path of development.

I teach up through all major scales, and through the first book of "First Lessons in Bach"- which many of my students have used to get perfect scores on NYSSMA exams, and have used in auditions to get accepted into schools such as the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts in Astoria.

About David S.

Hello everyone!

My name is David, and I am a NYC based performer, producer, and educator. I have been teaching in the area ever since I left high school to students both young and old. I have a great deal of experience, and offer a focused, yet light and enjoyable lesson that allows for individual input and unique experiences.

I enjoy making sure that while my students are learning the fundamentals of their instrument, they are also learning about the ideas of music theory, ear training, and music appreciation. I feel that these concepts are just as important as learning where to put your fingers, and I think that this approach creates a well rounded player that understands the real depth and amazing potential of music as an art.

David was very patient when I struggled with simple concepts and tailored the lesson to supplement areas that needed work. I always leave with a smile, excited to keep practicing.

David's experience definitely shows when he's teaching music, instead of doing things "by the book", David is able to adapt and cater to the way I learn, making things that have eluded my intelligible grasp my whole life easy to understand.

Barry Herman Entertainment

I have been playing in dance bands in and around the NYC area for a number of years. This type of playing brings one musicianship into focus- performances are high paced, off the cuff, and require a confident and quick musical intuition. Something different is always happening on the bandstand.

Private

I have been teaching one on one private lessons ever since my graduation from high school. Over the years, I have developed a very personable and relaxed style that centers in on what students need to learn, and getting to it in a natural, and unforced way. This makes for lessons that are fun yet focused.
