My teaching philosophy is this: to help you reach your goals. We will achieve them by using non-traditional classroom methods that embrace the fundamentals. My lessons are fun, and they are tailored to each student's particular needs and skills.
I specialize in sax, clarinet, and introductory flute. I also teach beginning to intermediate jazz improvisation, and music theory.
If the student is in grade school, lessons will focus on assignments and school band music. I can help with performance tests, recitals, juries, and final exams too.
For the more advanced students, we will master the scales important to developing facility, including listening and transcribing exercises.
I play tenor sax and clarinet professionally in a number of blues, jazz, and soul bands throughout Southern California. I studied with the legendary tenor jazz master Joe Marillo for over two years. I also studied with another tenor jazz legend, Daniel Jackson.
This year, I was invited to lead sax and jazz master classes at Grossmont high school. I was also hired by Sam Ash Music to head up their woodwinds instruction, and I run their student jazz jam. An instructor at San Diego State University/Extended Studies/OLLI, I ran a public jazz jam at the legendary Java Joe's for over a year.
I hope to talk with you soon, about how I can help you reach your playing goals.
