    About Darnell P.

I have been a musician since 3rd grade. I began on recorder and never turned back. I continued on to play bass and piano with my grandmother's church over the summers for 7 years. I began brass instruments in middle school and by the time I was heading to college I could play every horn in the brass family except French Horn. I earned a scholarship to the University of Alabama for Jazz Trombone and Euphonium. While in college, I had the oppprtunity to participate in Drum Corps International playing Euphonium for the Bluecoats as well as playing cymbals with the Atlanta Quest a WGI Indoor drumline. My sophomore year I changed majors to Percussion Studies and continued on to graduate with a degree in Music: Percussion Performance from the University of Alabama. Upon recieving my undergrad, I began teaching band with the Birmingham Public Schools System for 2 years. On the weekends during my tenure in BPS, I was the Music Director for the Scrollworks Nonprofit Community Music Organization. There, I aided in curriculum development and was the Assistant Conductor for the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. The following year I was accepted into grad school at The University of Florida where I earned a master's degree in Elementary Education K-6 and my NCATE Music K-12 certification. While in Florida, I was a member of several community based ensembles, most notably the Gainesville Pops and the Gainesville Community Orchestra on percussion. From there, I taught 5th grade with a local charter school and was a percussion instructor with the Gainesville High School Marching Band. I began playing guitar and drums with the Rashon Medlock Band. There we set up a professional recording studio where we have put out two albums and are studio musicians for many local and often national artists. Our skillset spans any genre needed by our artists which will be the basis of my guitar lessons. Versatility opens you up to be anywhere and play anything. My experience on guitar has taken me through a full spectrum of music styles from blues to classical, and from bluegrass to jazz. I am still a student of music to this day and I invite you begin your journey with me. Allow me to share what I have gained from my music mentors throughout my career with in hopes of helping your progress to meet your own self determined goals! Thank you for your time!
