This was my first private lesson with Dr. Daniel, most importantly he made me feel very comfortable and I wasn't afraid to sing notes in front of him. Dr.Daniel took the time to gather my history and take notes about what I said. Dr. Daniel was very thorough for our first visit, even though I had only booked my first class to be 30 minutes. I look forward to taking more lessons with him and am excited for our next lesson! Thank you so much!+ Read More
Dr . Daniel is great in his field and very honest to talk to .
Though my time as a student with Dr. Dan was short, it was very valuable. Even though the lessons were about singing, it helped me gain a general confidence in myself regarding posture, and using a loud voice. He has given a number of exercises to develop my breathing, vibrato, tone, and lower registers to use on my own. Dr. Dan is a great teacher who makes the atomsphere of the lessons very friendly and I would highly recommend him!+ Read More
Dr. Dan coached me on singing breath-support, enabling me become more relaxed when hitting the notes at the high end of my range. His explanations on vocal placement are very clear and intuitive. I recommend him highly for anyone serious about learning to sing with high confidence.+ Read More
My lesson with Dr. Daniel was very good. He was very friendly and made the atmosphere of the lesson very comfortable. He demonstrated his techniques and pointed out my habits of mine that I was not aware of. The area is also very friendly as well. I look forward to future lessons with Dr. Daniel.+ Read More
Great teacher!!! Detailed (per student's request) while very vivid explanations :)
Dr. Daniel C is an amazing teacher, he's the top of the top. Not only is he an extraordinary vocalist but also he's a very kind and caring person. I feel very fortunate to be his student and highly recommend that you sign up with him today.
Wow-derful. Dr. Collins, is one of a kind "unique. "
Highly recommend Dr. Daniel C. He was exactly what I needed; professional knowledgeable and easy to work with!
Excellent first lesson
I have had other voice instructors, but Dan will be the last one I go to--he is a truly gifted singer and instructor. He is masterful at clearly explaining concepts and giving you just the right prompt that helps you get to the right sound or placement. You can tell he's not using cookie-cutter tactics, he hones in on you and figures out how you'll best understand. I have so much more confidence in hitting notes and recreating performances. I've grown tremendously working with Dan. And I've thoroughly enjoyed the process, as he's a great person as well!+ Read More
It was a pleasure to have my son take lessons from Dr Collins. I wish we had more time, but since we're were in NY for a short summer trip, a few lessons were all we had. My son connected with Dan and looked forward to each lesson. He learnt breathing, posture, expressions for the singing and other tips that will help him in any performance he gives on stage. Dr Collins has made a lasting impression on my son not only as a teacher but as someone my son looks up to as a role model.+ Read More
Dan is a wonderfully insightful and gifted teacher. He has extensive knowledge of the voice and is able to impart this knowledge with ease. He is professional, supportive and a pleasure to work with.
Dan is an outstanding teacher! His ability to connect with a student and impart technical knowledge in a kind, nurturing way is exceptional. My son adores him and has gained so much from his time with Dan. He is an expert in his field and highly engaging. My son is like any other teenage boy. He likes Jack White, Jimi Hendrix and comic books. He also loves classical singing with Dan. My son chose to learn with Dan over school of rock because Dan is brilliant and has really helped develop his voice. He is completely unpretentious but thoroughly professional. A very talented and special teacher!+ Read More
What an absolute wealth of information and advice we gained from Dr. Daniel. Very nice, and extremely comfortable to speak with. Obviously an expert in his field, and so willing to help. Highly recommended. Grateful for this experience, thank you !
Having had several musical teachers in the past, you can tell who is truly passionate about their craft and their students. Dan is the real deal. Right from the start, he is attentive to your needs and tailors the lessons to the individual.
The lessons themselves are fun and helpful. Each lesson builds on top of the previous one and allows the student to grow at a comfortable pace. I think Dan is fantastic teacher and would encourage you to try out one of his lessons.
Just had my first lesson with Dr. Dan--I can honestly say it was one of (probably the) best experiences for a voice lesson that I've had. He was fun, kind, professional, and had direction for where we will/can go with the lessons. Feeling excited and ready to continue!+ Read More
Great first lesson, very excited about continuing.
Dan is truly the right type of teacher for anyone who is looking for a top-notch, well-rounded, nurturing, and strong pedagogue instructor. As a professional bassoonist who also loves to sing, I learned from his vocal training how to be a better bassoonist. For the longest time, I was suffering from physical aches and pains from playing my instrument without the proper air and oral cavity support, and Dan's training helped release a great deal of tension in my bassoon playing. I was ready to quit the bassoon, and he helped me love it again. Not to mention only just a couple of voice lessons improved my voice significantly. I highly recommend him!+ Read More
Dan is AWESOME! Made me feel comfortable and really helps me understand about my voice. Very patient and works well around my sporadic work schedule. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for an amazing and talented vocal coach
I spent a few days in New York and I was lucky to meet Dr. Dan.
Dr. Dan allowed me to discover important espectos to improve my voice. Now I apply what I have learned with Dr. Dan and I feel a marked improvement.
Dr. Dan listens carefully and knows very well explain. Dr. Dan uses really good teaching resources. I have understood very well all the ideas to improve my voice.
Of course I'm going back to New York to take classes with Dr. Dan. I feel very happy.
Dr. Dan is an extraordinary teacher.
Dr. Collins is a deeply caring, skilled, and knowledgeable voice teacher who, for the past month and a half, has helped me formulate and reach toward my operatic goals.
Very patient and flexible in my scheduling our lessons. In addition, he is extremely thoughtful in choosing and creating vocal exercises for me to work on.
He is an absolute pleasure to work with. Looking forward to many more lessons with this fine singer!
Dan is a marvelous teacher.
His wealth of information, dedication and patience are a true gem. He is passionate about teaching and has a wonderful, positive, uplifting approach. We worked on various aspects of technique, such as strengthening the voice improving pitch, range, breath efficiency and vocal power.
We worked hard but there was always levity in our lessons. He is classically trained, but his instruction applies to all singing styles, including my own (Bossa Nova). Thanks, Dan. I am grateful and I will definitely be back for more!
Dr. Collins is a fantastic teacher! He takes time to listen to your voice then comes up with specific exercises, suggestions, and encouraging comments to bring out the best sound. I heard results after my first class and every class after.
I also learn best by example and he's patient enough to sing verses along with me in a beautiful baritone. We've even practiced pronunciation for other languages and will go over translations to help with the emotion of a piece.
I'd highly recommend Dr. Collins for any level vocal student/performer/hobbyist. Your voice will only improve under his coaching.
Daniel is a wonderful teacher with an incredible voice. His passion for voice is evident in his teaching. He gets quite excited when you hit a note correctly! I think that kind of positivity and energy inspires you to do better and work harder. I believe a teacher should be encouraging and his non-judgmenetal attitude helps foster the growth of learning. I definitely recommend him!+ Read More
Dr. Collins is an incredible voice teacher and coach. Under his guidance, my total beginner’s voice (not even karaoke) grew so much and so quickly!
Dan has a natural ability to bridge students' personal ambitions with the appropriate balance of technical training, push and honest encouragement.
After just three months of lessons, I recently sang a French chanson in front of an audience for the very first time in his studio class. I had so much fun and completely surprised myself by the speed in which I surfaced a hidden talent and harnessed a power that I had always dreamt of exploring.
Thank you, Dan, I can't wait for next time!
I trained with Dan at the National Opera Center in Chelsea and can say nothing but great things. He created each new lesson to accomodate my strengths and weaknesses, as well as my goals. He was always persistent and encouraging, helping me to sing with confidence as well as get my foot into the world of vocal technical prowess. He instantly spotted my faults, such as diction and vowel formation and always had exercises in mind to improve and overcome them. He has a massive knowledge of the repertoire from classical to contemporary and was open to whatever I wanted to sing, from Copland to Marvin Gaye.
If I wasn't moving out of the city I'd continue training with Dan and recommend anyone serious about singing, or improving their vocal chops to study with him as well.
I look forward every week to my lesson with Dan. He brings keen musical knowledge mixed with a love for singing to every session. He is the true definition of a good coach - patient, encouraging, supportive, and most notably able to provide constructive feedback both when you hit the mark and when you need to keep practicing. He makes meaningful and creative suggestions on how to get the most out of our lessons and takes the time to get to know your vocal range and style. But I think what makes him stand out the most is that it is clear he is passionate about what he does and that makes all the difference!+ Read More
Dan is very knowledgeable about the voice and singing and communicates the principles and concepts of singing in a straightforward manner. He clearly enjoys teaching and creates a relaxed atmosphere in which one works hard but also has fun. I’ve been studying with Dan for several months and my singing has grown in confidence and freedom. I’ve been singing for quite a number of years and have had several teachers and with Dan have learned some things about singing and the breath that I hadn’t heard from my former teachers. Aside from Dan’s technical knowledge and the variety of vocal exercises he has at his disposal, he has given me a lot of helpful advice on song interpretation. Dan has a great sense of humor and never lets the joy of singing get forgotten in the pursuit of technical excellence. I also appreciate that he actually takes notes on what was covered in each lesson so that each lesson builds upon the last.+ Read More
Dr. Dan is the real deal. Dan is an extremely winning person with a near-endless supply of creative teaching methods. He really cares. With a single expertly crafted turn of phrase, he can transform my shaky singing voice into something, well, pretty good! I always feel confident, well-informed, and entertained under his tutelage. Great guy, great teacher.+ Read More
I always wanted to sing and being a musician myself thought that it was the one thing that I was lacking, In the few months I've been with Daniel I can say I have learn so much about the voice and improved faster than what I have ever imagined.
Dan is a very amazing instructor; he is very patient and his instructions are very to-the-point.
He is a great teacher and is very patient with someone who had no experience in singing or receiving lessons. My favorite part of each lesson is seeing his genuine excitement when there is improvement or when I hit a note I didn't think I could before. On top of his excellent teaching he is overall a very nice guy and someone who I enjoy talking to before an after each lesson about general things going on in the world and in each other's lives. A great experience overall and I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to be more confident with singing.+ Read More
To be more clear. The time wasted was on discussing things that were not related t o vocal lessons. Credibility was given to was learned. As a student wanting to grow my vocal abilities I would have liked less chat. Simply wanted more focus on music less focus on anything else. The review is based upon on my personal experience. Dan wasn't a terrible coach, I just wanted just a little more focus on singing.+ Read More
In response to Eleni's review below: The student's interest in "purely singing" was accompanied with a disregard for my instruction. "Purely singing" is an impossibility in the vocal studio. Concise yet thorough discussions of posture, vowel placement, tongue tension, breath management, intonation, resonance, etc. must occur for the sake of awareness and vocal improvement.+ Read More
Dan was an amazing instructor and was incredibly patient and helpful during the lessons. He is extremely knowledgeable about different methods to help with speaking voice/singing lessons so I would highly recommend him to anyone that is interested in improving either of these two points.+ Read More
I learned a lot from Dan. Good vocal coach for the most part.
Sometimes he didn't provide what I was paying for, pure vocal coach.
Didn't spend as much time on purely singing as much as I would have liked.
Dan is an excellent singer and an excellent teacher. Those two don't always come together in the same person in my experience.
Dan is very encouraging and has helped me very rapidly to make improvements after not singing for several years.
The learning process has often been a frustrating experience for me. Dan is very helpful in keeping me focused on what's working so I don't get too fixated on what is not yet working. He helps me with my technique for what isn't working so I hear improvements every week.
I would highly recommend Dan to anyone who wants to learn great vocal technique and build their confidence as a singer!
Dan has been the best experience I've yet to have singing. I come from a background where I always sang a lot, but never properly. In only a few lessons I feel like I've progressed so far from where I initially was, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
Along with this, there's a wonderful low-stress environment when working together. I never feel like screwing up is a bad thing, it's all part of the learning experience and he is extremely motivating and positive throughout.
Can't recommend enough!
Daniel is a fantastic teacher! He has helped me so much in our lessons, I can't recommend him enough. I've really enjoyed his enthusiasm and support in our lessons. He is always encouraging and he challenges me in a way that makes me feel like I can accomplish the goals we've set out in our lessons. What I like most about Daniel's teaching, second only to his enthusiasm, is how clearly he explains often very complicated concepts. He has a way of making singing accessible and has helped me immensely both with my technique and my confidence. I would HIGHLY recommend Daniel to any student from beginner to advanced!+ Read More
Dan is great at finding the nuances in your voice. He can easily find any issue you may have and give you an exercise to address it. In a short amount of time I'm already hearing an improvement with my voice. I highly recommend him.
Dan is a very gifted teacher, and a wonderful person. He is intelligent, super punctual, and has a flair for explaining the most intricate details of music and voicing in a way that a 5 year old can easily understand.
He encourages you to sing in the proper way, and break out of bad habits at an early stage. If you are looking for an awesome music teacher, look no further!!
Dan is extremely knowledgeable, patient, focused and funny! A singer my whole life, but mostly untrained, Dan helped me to get back to my passion by asking good questions upfront about my goals and using lessons to strengthen / expand MY voice (rather than shaping it into something else). Unlike any other coach I've seen, Dan actually keeps track of my progress by taking notes and actively revisiting them. He's great and I'm looking forward to continuing our work.+ Read More
Daniel is a wonderful instructor. I had not sung opera for over 10 years, and felt very unsure about trying it again. In just 8 weeks of lessons with Daniel, my voice has gotten stronger and richer through his guidance. As an instructor, he is very patient and understanding, while still pushing to get the best possible sound. When describing vocal techniques, he can explain them in many different ways in case it’s not clear on the first try. Daniel has also always been a reliable communicator and is flexible with his schedule.
I have left every lesson with Daniel feeling more confident and I am always looking forward to the next one!
Dan is simply an amazing, gifted teacher. After just a few lessons, I've learned and gained so much insight as a singer. His approach is fun, engaging, and yet precise. His feedback is always positive and motivating. Each lesson is unique and the hour goes by so quickly. Highly recommended!+ Read More
Dan is an excellent instructor. He keeps lessons fun, while bringing two or three new teachings to the table each class. Additionally, he is always prompt and accommodating when it comes to our schedule. My only regret is that a half hour class goes by way too fast! Best vocal coach in NYC!! Tested out 3 vocal coaches before working with Dan. Understands music to the core, passionate about teaching, and 100% committed to work. Very respectful and reasonable. Artistic, talented, and great to work with.
Dan has really positive energy and will help you be the best performer you can be!
I started taking singing lessons from Dan as a complete novice. He is true a professional in his own right but also in the way he teaches and motives me during our sessions. His classes are educational, challenging and rewarding. I enjoy the structure of his classes – each one being tailored to specific areas of improvement with a variety of vocal exercises and song selections.
He has such a keen ear and eye for every detail. I appreciate his persistence and encouragement in pointing out the small details that will help me become a better singer. I leave each class knowing I have improved and feeling much more confident with my overall performance.
Honestly Daniel is an awesome guy, I am working on becoming an entertainer with voice acting while playing videos. Daniel so far has helped not lose my voice ac fast and given me plenty of exercises to try. Thanks a ton to TakeLessons and to Daniel.
First of all, let me say that Daniel is one of the most engaging, knowledgeable and honest teachers you will ever meet. Even though I have a background in Musical Theater, it's been a long time since I did any singing. Daniel was able to pinpoint exactly, the course of action needed to improve my voice. I look forward to taking some lessons from him when I go to New York. I could learn quite a bit from him! It doesn't hurt that his voice is like buttah either. The ONLY reason, I didn't give 5 stars is because Skype isn't an ideal learning medium for me.+ Read More

In spite of only being able to have one lesson with Daniel due to intense graduate school studies, in one hour Daniel helped me to understand and learn about proper breathing to support my voice in order to be a better public speaker. I hope to continue my studies with him in the future. If you want a gracious, kind, generous teacher with a most beautiful, melodious voice, study with Daniel Collins!
Thank you, Daniel.
I only have had 3 lessons and noticed improvements. He has explained the mechanics in terms that are easy to comprehend, has taken the time to listen to my voice and provide feedback that is almost as if he was present and based on my performance. He is able to select the proper technique to get me to feel the sound and then to shape it to a more vibrant melody so that I can repeat it again and again therefore making it my own. Looking forward to more continue conversations and exchanges, Daniel is keen is understanding the challenges and is experienced enough to provide a course of actions that will lead to results....no doubt about it...It is paying off....thank you Dan...+ Read More
Dan became my voice teacher while I was still in college. At that time he was still a Masters student, and he very quickly impressed me with the quality of his instruction. He helped me to establish personal goals based on what I hoped to accomplish and worked with me tirelessly to get there. I had many bad habits that no other teacher had been able to help me work through in such a structured and fun way!
His passion for music was infectious, and every time I entered his studio I felt like I was in a positive, supportive place. His pedagogy went beyond just metaphors, and he would often guide me through the science behind his instruction. I had never felt so comfortable in my own voice before!
I would definitely recommend Daniel to anyone looking for a voice instructor. He is an incredible musician and an absolutely phenomenal teacher. You can't go wrong!
I was fortunate enough to take lessons from Dan for almost an entire year until he left to sing at the Met--WOW! How many students can say they had to take a lesson hiatus because their teacher was singing at such a prestigious venue?
I have been taking musical lessons since I was 8 years old and Dan is the best teacher I've ever had. He is extremely knowledgeable, very friendly, incredibly talented, and truly cares about his students. I learned vocal warm-ups and techniques I still use every time I sing while simultaneously concentrating on the specific pieces I wanted to work on. I understudied the role of Roxie in Chicago while I was his student and he was incredibly encouraging while helping me really grasp the nuances in both the music and acting. After too many teachers who felt that being harsh on students was the best way to help them improve, Dan was a breath of fresh air with his positive approach to teaching. He will firmly guide you to be the best you can be with a smile all the way.
While Dan is classically trained, he understood that I was on the musical theatre track and catered to my goals in that field. He would help me find music both in classical repertoire and music theatre to boost my skills and was always trying to learn more about what I wanted to get from lessons so he could help me as much as he could. He is just an incredibly warm, caring person who was genuinely interested about my musical career and never failed to ask how my auditions went after helping me prep for weeks.
In short, if you are looking for vocal lessons in any category, look no further. I can't recommend anyone more than I can Dan. Not everyone who is proficient in an area can necessarily teach it, but Dan proves that you can have it all as both an exceptional vocalist and an incredible teacher.
Daniel has been one of the single best instructors i have ever had. When I walked into my vocal lesson the second week of my freshman year of college I new almost nothing about the intricacies of the voice. For that entire semester Daniel taught me everything I needed to know to really solidify my voice, and he did it in in ways that made sense to me and was very kind and encouraging throughout the entire process. I've always had a passion for music, but learning about all the bits and pieces that make music and the voice so wonderful. I would recommend him to anyone who wanted to learn the basics of singing all the way up to the most advanced levels. Daniel truly is a fantastic teacher in all respects.+ Read More
Dr. Daniel C. coached me this past year in preparation for various classical collegiate competitions where I won 3 first places and $2,250. I enjoyed every minute. He was absolutely wonderful! He was so professional, encouraging and supportive and I was always excited to have another coaching. He gives you the long-lasting tools to succeed on technicalities of voice and also the musicianship of the art. To this day, I still work on his interpretation of the concept of onset every day I practice.
Along with working hard, Dr. Daniel C. will help steer you to whatever your goal may be.
I was fortunate enough to find Daniel several years ago when he was a Master's Degree student at Florida State University and I had just joined the chorus to sing Beethoven's Ninth. I was a rank amateur, to say the least, not having sung in an organized way for 40 years. I can't say that Daniel turned me into a great singer, but after my year with him I was vastly improved. He is compassionate and kind, never letting you feel as though you are not making progress. He takes time to explain the mechanics of vocal performance in language anyone can understand. He knows all the vocal exercises and spends quite a bit of time on them, but we were always working, too, on a performance piece or two--a good balance. I benefited enormously from his patient and skillful teaching. I benefited more from knowing as a man of talent, good humor, patience, and irreproachable integrity. You will never regret having him as your vocal coach.+ Read More
