*** Lesson Details ***
I am mostly laid back, however, I do demand excellence and great tonal projection. For clarinet, I really like Klose's method, however, I use a lot of Rose Etudes, Voxman, etc. Sightreading is a focus in clarinet lessons as well as ear training and theoretical concepts such as building tetrachords, identifying major or minor intervals, familiarity with major and all forms of the minor scale as well. Special attention is given to hand position as well as noticing and achieving tonal excellence. For violin, special emphasis is placed upon proper bowing technique, left hand position, and ear training to improve intonation. Scales and arpeggios would be the building blocks to flawless technique. Method book that I prefer would include the Suzuki and Flesch methods. In all instruments that I teach, I also utilize You Tube videos to enhance the learning process.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect all students to have a stand and a metronome/tuner. With piano students I have a variety of educational games that make learning fun and easier. I usually travel with a whiteboard and manuscript paper in order to test music writing ability.
*** Specialties ***
I teach mainly in the classical genre....for Violin I like the Suzuki method, though I can teach through any method. I am aware of the freedom of jazz improvisation as well.
Performed as Principal clarinet and as soloist in the Allen TX Philharmonic Orchestra
Diploma granted by the University of North Texas

Very knowledgeable instructor and extremely accommodating. I lived slightly outside his radius and he went to great lengths to have TakeLessons extend his service area.
Damien was so wonderful! He worked with my 60 year-old dad with no experience and made him feel so comfortable. He already learned so much. My dad is really excited to continue learning!

My son has learned much with this first lesson.
Damien is a fantastic teacher! Our daughter will be a high school sophomore when school starts this month. She has been taking clarinet lessons from him for the last two years. Damien gives lessons at her school, but is also flexible enough to come to our home when school is out, or if we need to squeeze in a weekend lesson. He is a talented musician, and as a teacher, Damien is encouraging, thorough, and challenging, in a low-key manner. He wants his students to play with confidence. He is a person of integrity, and respectful to his students--she looks forward to her lessons. Damien has made excellent solo selections for her. With his teaching and guidance, our daughter did very well at the All Region competitions in her 8th and 9th grade years. Lastly, Damien is a good communicator, which is greatly appreciated.Show More

My first lesson with Damien went very well, my son is pleased with his teaching methods. He is good teacher and makes violin lessons fun for my son.
We had our first lesson on Violin last week, and my son has been quite happy and pleased with Damien. We initially were not sure if we had chosen the right person as Damien's main instrument was not Violin. We are sure now & have not made a mistake by choosing Damien.
He was very helpful and followed up twice after the lesson on next steps & what my son needs to practice before next week.
My daughter likes him. He is not too strict, but is able to still get things done. For my daughter's personality he is perfect! When she starts to loose interest, he always brings something new to the table to keep her engaged and motivated. He keeps the teaching teaching technique but always makes it fun. Recommend!Show More

Damien teaches my 9-year old son piano. My son absolutely loves him and says, "He is the best teacher ever!" Damien is patient and provides positive feedback. He also provides music for my son and I have seen and heard progress in little time!
Damien has really helped my daughter progress in her study of clarinet. He listens to me on areas that I'd like her to work on and incorporates that into her training. He is flexible when needed on when and where to have her lessons as we are often busy, which I really appreciate.Show More
Damien had taught my children after Hurricane Katrina separated us by distance, with us relocating to Georgia and him relocating to Texas. We thought that was the end of the lessons, but thanks to the webcam, we were able to continue. What an enriching experience that has been! Not only did my kids get lessons online, but I was able to finally get lessons as an adult, using the excuse of helping out since this online thing was a kind of hybrid experience. Amazingly, the online experience worked out very well, not only because of the convenience, but also because of the very well structured lessons Damien pushes through week after week. He has an amazing ability of getting the most out of your abilities, never settling for what could be considered sub-par. Sometimes I am like, "You expect me to play THIS complex classic?" and to my surprise he enables me to stretch mentally and physically to successfully play these songs, time after time. The one thing I especially appreciate about his teaching technique is his ability to move his students along, quickly, through the songs. If he sees that you are lingering too long on a certain section, he will kick into supercharged mode, skipping through to nearly the end of the song, allowing you to taste the feeling of mastering the entire piece. It is hard to stay down about mastering a hard piece with him as a teacher, as he knows exactly what to get you to work on to lift up your spirits. I heavily endorse Damien as a teacher. He more than gets the job done!Show More
We have had a great experience with Damien for my 13 year old daughter. Our daughter has been playing for just 2 years and Damien has kept his lessons suited to her skill level. We didn't want her to completely lose her edge over the summer and Damien has helped her do that.Show More
Great piano instructor!!
Damien has been teaching my two children in my home for 6 months and we have been very impressed!! The progress my children made during this time has far exceeded all my expectations. Damien consistently demonstrates he is a thoughtful, reliable, and knowledgeable teacher. He has a contagious passion and love of music and is able to channel his enthusiasm to his students. Damien demonstrates a strong understanding of each individual childâs ability and customizes lessons to meet current skill level, while at the same time provides appropriate challenges to encourage musical development.
Damien has a strong rapport and sense of trust with my family while still maintaining authority as an expert instructor. His high expectations for every student are evident at piano recitals, as each student performs their pieces proficiently and with great enthusiasm.
I admire all of Damien's characteristics; most of all his gift to connect with students and his ability to adapt instruction to meet individual needs. Damien's positive, encouraging instruction style motivates his students to develop into confident musicians. I highly recommend Damien as a music teacher!
