About Crystal E.
At The New School, I'm studying Cultural and Media studies but I have always had a knack for math. In middle school, I took high school math courses and completed my state's math curriculum by my sophomore year of high school.
Last semester I revisited my love of math when I volunteered to be a math tutor for I Have A Dream. With this foundation, I was sent weekly to Harlem's PS. 7 where I assisted mostly middle school students and a select few high school students with their math homework.
Most students enjoyed my one-on-one, stating "I wish you were our math teacher" instead of their own. I very much enjoyed these sessions because I could focus on the individual. In my opinion, math is a subject that is relational and requires individual attention to ensure connections from the real world and a problem set are identifiable. Hopefully, as your tutor I am able to help you see those connections, whether it through visuals, hypotheticals, or song.
Although I have only been a tutor for a semester-long my presence was impactful to PS. 7 since I was asked to return to the program for the Spring Semester. Unfortunately, I had to turn down the opportunity due to class schedule conflicts, but my supervisors are willing to write any reference or discuss my ability as a tutor if need be.
