    About Courtney P.

When I was in 7th grade, I struggled at the beginning of my first Algebra class, enduring countless "lessons" from my wonderful, well-meaning engineer father, whose attempts at instruction included a lot of "How can you not get it? It's so obvious!" Many years later, I'm grateful to have had the experience of struggling in math. It made me a better student and a more accessible, empathetic teacher. Above all, I believe students need a safe space to feel challenged and take risks, to build confidence outside of the classroom so they can shine when it truly counts. Many students experience math-based fear and anxiety which can be paralyzing - interfering with the ability to take in and process new information or to recall things they most certainly know. I have taught high school general and special education math for 5 years, focusing on Algebra I (Common Core), Geometry (Common Core), and Algebra II. Additionally, I have tutored students in SAT Math (both new and old) as well as middle school math. I specialize in preparing students who struggle with math content for high-stakes tests, emphasizing both skill-building and problem-solving strategies. My favorite question is, "Does that make sense?" and my second favorite is "Why?" I believe that all students can perform well in math if equipped with the correct tools and mindsets and that the teacher should serve as equal parts consultant, cheerleader, and content expert. I have an undergraduate degree in Finance and worked in investment banking for 2 years, a job that required intensive quantitative problem solving. Additionally, I have a masters degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. I currently work at the College Board in Advanced Placement.
