For over 30 years it’s been an honor to serve students learning to play a stringed instrument. Teaching is a passion for me. My primary instrument is cello, and secondary instruments are violin, and bass. I’ve been lucky to have studied cello with Hamilton Cheifetz, Stephanie McDougal, Yo Yo Ma, Hans Jurgen Jensen, Carter Brey, and Dorthy Crow (on violin). I attended Tanglewood Institute in 1987, and Congress of Strings in 1988 both on full scholarships. Additionally, I was fortunate to win the Oregon State Solo Contest on Cello in 1986, and 1987.
I can recall being asked as early as 1980 as I attended Forest Hills Elementary School what I might do as an adult. I had an immediate answer “I’m going to be a cellist and teach music”. Even from the very beginning I had no doubt what I was here to do. Not once have I strayed from the love I have for music. There is a picture of me in my grade school yearbook with me walking at school carrying the cello in its case on my head. I’m not sure why I remember that, but it sticks with me.
Being a good teacher is all about learning how to communicate with different learners. Understanding that each of us receives information in our own unique way. I am a fantastic communicator! I observe what works with each student, how they are feeling, and identify what interests them musically. Stringed instruments are not only instruments of sound but of physical vibration, which is felt throughout the body. I will often ask a student why they choose this instrument, and many times a reply is something to the effect of ‘I like the way it feels when I play it.’ I remember being surprised by this response initially, but then realized music is more than just the sound we create.
Later, around the age of 17, my grandfather advised me not to go into music. He told me that through the long hours of work associated with being a good musician you might lose the love for it. I can remember thinking this was absurd. I wanted to be a musician and that was that! On a certain level he was correct. There are many peaks and valleys in a musician's life. At times I’ve been on top of the world and loved everything about the instrument and music. Then of course, there were months where I thought I made a mistake. I like to share these stories, because I believe it is natural to experience these ups and downs. Playing an instrument is much like having a relationship with another human being.
As I finished my college years, I can remember asking my cello instructor (this was right before my jury) ‘how do you teach a cello lesson?’ He smiled and laughed and said ‘I don’t know’. Even to this day, I’m stunned by his response. In reflection, I think he was saying that I needed to figure it out. By that time, I had already spent 12 years in lessons. I understood the basic flow of a lesson and what needed to be covered. What a journey it is to learn how to learn how to teach.
It is an interesting process to identify how a person learns. Some need to be physically shown a concept, others need to see it, some need to hear, and some even need to feel the extreme opposite of what you are trying to teach. My first teacher called this the use of extremes. In teaching, I use every tool I can dream up, or that has been used on me.
As we move through 2020 I have found new ways of teaching (forced upon me by Covid19). I have learned how to use technology to my advantage, how to use DA, how to use BandLab, and how to teach effectively over zoom. We can create concerts online and present them to the world. Having said all this, I still look forward to the day I can re-enter my real teaching studio and safely be with you all.
I look forward to meeting many new students in the future!
All my best,
Corey

Corey has been an amazing teacher for both of my sons! His talent with the instruments, his ability to share facts and make it interesting, and his intuition about what is effective for teaching young kids make the experience really wonderful for our whole family. He has been flexible in scheduling lessons. He is kind and patient with the boys. They look forward to their lessons every week and that is a great victory even if daily practice is challenging. Both boys have shown great improvement in their skills!

Corey is the single biggest reason I stuck with music and was eventually accepted to several notable music conservatories including the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University and Oberlin Conservatory. I began studying with Corey at the age of 9, and he made the entire learning process exciting and engaging. His enthusiasm for music is contagious for students at all levels, and his expertise in guiding his pupils through the extremely complex process of learning a stringed instrument is unparalleled. Corey brings decades of pedagogical and professional experience to each lesson, and is always eager to impart this wisdom on his students. I cannot recommend Corey enough, for students at any level he is the best teacher you will be able to find!

Our daughter studied violin with Corey for six years. She loved learning from him. I think Corey has a wonderful ability to nurture the love of making music. His teaching style is kind and patient. And he makes it fun. I would highly recommend him!

Corey is very talented and I have known him for years now. Not only does he help with technique, intonation and other things, but he also teaches different ways to practice so you can improve while you're not in a lesson. Just a very friendly and helpful teacher.

My son enjoyed taking cello lessons from Corey. He developed his skills, not only in playing the cello, but sight reading and musicianship.

The highlight of my children's week is Corey's lesson. He is fun, kind, knowledgeable and inspiring. I highly recommend him.

My son had 10 yrs of lessons with Corey. Corey is an amazing teacher. My son has gained an amazing skill and a wonderful relationship that will last a lifetime.

Corey worked with my daughter for four years, beginning her freshman year. He began by helping her with music assigned for her orchestra class, finding specific techniques to improve upon as they went. By her senior year they were working on advanced techniques, resulting in her reaching State for Solo & Ensemble.
Throughout her entire time with Corey her confidence grew tremendously. As a parent I appreciated the strong relationship and mutual respect they developed. I have recommended Corey and would continue to do so.

As an adult beginner, I appreciate Corey having the patience in addressing my adult frustrations. I’ve learned and developed skills in theory and listening skills as well as technique. While he primarily teaches younger students, I would recommend him to any adult interested in taking up or improving their cello playing.

Corey has been instrumental to my daughter's growth in her cello practice. He's a very experienced teacher working with school-aged children and very patient and adaptive to each student's individual needs.

Our ten year old daughter was being exposed to string instruments in a school situation. We decided at the beginning of the year to engage Mr. Averill on a private basis. It is truly astounding the progress she has made. He has introduced her to a variety of material and motivates her such that she practice literally every day. He is helping her with musical theory as well as playing the instrument. He has the perfect balance of insistence on excellence while praising and motivating. She will no doubt gradually increase her daily practice time as more is asked of her as her competency improves. It is hard to over state the progress she has made while maintaining an ability to have a positive motivated attitude. Mr Averill is a master at reading her. A true gift for a music teacher

Excellent teacher super dedicated and lot of knowledge and experience and fenomenal with the kids -

Corey has been working with our children for over 4 years. My son took three years of violin lessons and my daughter is on her second year of cello lessons. He is always a lot of fun to work with and helps his students develop a love of music early on. They have learned so much working with Corey and are advanced for their age/class, have participated in honors orchestra, a local youth symphony, and All-State. Corey is an enthusiastic dedicated professional, is always on time and has adapted his teaching methods well for working online. He has always been great working with our busy schedule and providing make-up lessons when needed. We look forward to many more years of lessons with him.

Corey has continued to offer high quality music lessons even though we are not able to have them in person now. My son continues to grow as a musician and genuinely enjoys making music.

Mr. Averil is an excellent teacher. He is kind, patient and engaging. He talks to the children and brings out the best in them. Both my boys really look forward to their music lessons with Mr. Averil and enjoy playing their instruments.

Corey has been an amazing teacher and friend for the past 10 years. He is super funny and fun to work with and he is very good at balancing hard work and fun! I started with him when I was in 4th grade and have been with him ever since, I cannot say how great of a teacher he is!

We couldn’t be happier with Corey. My son has taken lessons from others in the past that we thought were good...we didn’t know what we were missing! Corey communicates clearly, gives tangible things to practice and work on, and is friendly. I also appreciate that he takes time to check in and see how my son has been. During this quarantine kids are needing asl the connections they can find. My son looks forward to his lessons and I enjoy listening to him play.

I am a prominent professional musician in Portland and retired public school music teacher, and have had the opportunity to observe Corey teach on several occasions. Having evaluated several teachers during my career, I can honestly say that Corey is among the finest teachers of elementary school students I have EVER seen. Corey has a rare talent with children, and he teaches music with an easy going style and manner that brings out the best in all of his students--both young and old. Corey is likeable, professional, and easy to work with. I am pleased to give him my highest recommendations with no reservations.

My daughter has studied with Corey for five years in studio and now online amid the Covid situation. Corey is absolutely amazing at making playing the cello fun for the students, so much so my daughter wants to study cello in college. He is able to work with the students to find curriculum that is enjoyable and challenges the students.

My son is really enjoying lessons from Corey. The learning is both fast paced and fun. We highly recommend this teacher!

Excellent violin teacher to my 10-year old

The highlight of my children's week is their lesson with Corey. He is fun, knowledgeable and really connects with each child where they are at in their ability.
