Reduce your accent. Learn Standard American pronunciation. Build confidence. Find ease in speaking.

I trained for three years in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and can help you learn a system for training your own ear to hear accents, regionalisms, dialects and then feel, in your physical body, how to make shifts in how you speak and thereby how you sound. The work is not just academic, but physical, experiential and straightforward. It is enjoyable and empowering and something you will be able to easily practice on your own and apply in the day to day for quick results. I look forward to working with you!

    About Claire L.

I hold an MFA in Acting from the California Institute of the Arts and have been teaching professionally for over ten years. I teach Acting and Auditiong to young actors (10-18 years) and I also teach Public Speaking, Voice/Speech and Accent Reduction to those looking to find more ease and power when using their voice in front of others. I have taught, directed and coached young actors who have gone on to work professionally in Film, TV and Theater and my students have been accepted to renowned conservatories and universities across the country (NYU Tisch, California Institute of the Arts, AMDA and others). I am a passionate teacher who believes in the individual and in unlocking the creative genius, the impulses, the imagination and the unique forms of expression within each of my students. In my sessions, I encourage my students to “play” and to discover how to both lean in and tap in to what is there and then develop relaxation, ease and focus on the task at hand - a monologue, an audition, a speech or working with a text. In addition to teaching and coaching actors, I have worked extensively in the corporate worlds in areas of Voice, Speech and Presentation as a coach and have taught group classes on Public Speaking and Presentation. I have taught and coached students from China, Russia, Taiwan, Italy, Japan in addition to the U.S. Throughout the ten plus years that I have been teaching, I have helped both actors and non-actors, those in the professional business world, gain tools that lead to freedom and ease of expression when speaking in front of others, be it at an audition, an interview, giving a presentation to a board or speaking in front of thousands at a Ted Talk.

    Acting Teacher, Director of Showcase

    Jun, 2016 - Present

School of Creative and Performing Arts

Design and implement a two-track acting curriculum at a summer conservatory for pre-professional and professional young actors. Curriculum includes both a Core and an Advanced Acting track. Lead Voice, Speech and Movement progressions for actors that introduce students to the Linklater and Skinner voice and speech techniques. Movement progression includes Hatha Yoga, strength and conditioning, and basic contemporary Dance training emphasizing coordination rhythm, tempo and timing, in addition to group games and composition assignments. Movement progression also emphasizes the utilization of the core principals of the Alexander Technique for ease and alignment in posture and movement. Acting Studio incorporates Theatre Games, Improvisation, Clown, Meisner Technique, Text Analysis, Scene Study, Monologues, and the creation of Original Work. The Acting Studio curriculum emphasizes a technical foundation in speech, voice and text analysis, supplemented with games and exercises that encourage the actor to be active, to play, be present, truthful, receptive and responsive to his/her partners. In addition to Acting Instruction, give a weekly class on Text Analysis for actors focused on the work of current American playwrights with an emphasis on diverse voices in the current American Theatre. Text Analysis classes emphasize the close reading of a text with a focus on language, given circumstances, character, objective and action. Direct and stage a live Showcase each session at The Pasadena Playhouse. Provide a grade and a written evaluation of each student’s work and progress at the end of each session. Year Level: 8th – 12th
