Acting

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Of course the music of an opera or musical has captivated audiences for centuries, but what good is a performance if the acting is mediocre? I help my students understand that while they are to always be musical, a character is as much a part of the music and performance experience. Mozart is notorious for adding characterization to his music, as well as almost many other composers of different genres and musical eras. I find the most enjoyment out of teaching my students how to develop a character using spoken language, recitative, and accompaniment to inform their thoughts and actions while performing. I base much of my approach to acting on the methods and teachings of Sanford Meisner, but some students may also benefit from Stanislavsky or Strasberg approaches. Either way, my students will be able to showcase their acting abilities in a wide range of venues and outlets through my coachings.

Welcome to my page! My name is Chy and I've been teaching private voice lessons since 2011. I hold a Bachelors degree in Voice Performance and a Masters degree in Opera Performance, both from Wichita State University. While fulfilling my Masters, I was one of four Graduate Teaching Assistants in the voice department. Currently, I am a paraprofessional for a local high school, freelance performer/actor, acting coach, and private voice instructor in the Wichita area. In addition to teaching, I am an active performer with professional experience. I have had the opportunity to teach a variety of singing styles ranging from pop, musical theater, opera, sacred and jazz. I am a firm believer that there is no right or wrong way to sing, but rather efficient and less efficient ways. I am here to help you accomplish your goals whether singing and acting are hobbies for you or if you plan to make them your profession. I look forward to working with you!

It is safe to say that Chy is the best vocal coach I have ever had. He is down to Earth but always makes learning exciting. Everyday I leave with a bright smile on my face! If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be as passionate for singing as I am now.

A friend referred Chy to become my daughters' vocal teacher. In the one year she attended so grew so much in her singing capabilities. She had a vocal teacher prior to Chy for two years. I wish we had known Chy for those two years instead. My daughter takes singing serious and Chy put her on the right track to becoming something great. We miss him !

I can honestly say that Chy is one of the most talented musicians that I have had the honor to not only meet, but be instructed by. He is so incredibly patient and knowledgeable. I could just see his love and enthusiasm for music every time that we met. I truly recommend for anyone and everyone to be under his instruction. He helped me grow as a musician.

I came to Chy with no prior experience in acting and from the start he helped ease the process of underatanding the art. He is an amazing teacher with great patience. Not only that, there is something in the way Chy produces each lesson to fit you personally so you may truly learn. He is the best teacher I've had, in any field, and I fully reccomend him to anybody interested in the arts.

Singing · Online

Chy is a terrific singing coach that I would eagerly recommend to anyone who's interested in establishing solid technique. Over the course a dozen or so online lessons, he's brought me from being the subject of good-natured ribbing at karaoke events, to receiving my first compliment (something that I did not think was even theoretically possible). On top of that, he's friendly, a clear communicator, and has extremely reasonable rates.

By way of background, I am a total beginner when it comes to singing, but I've had extensive training in violin and piano (>15 years, including at places such as Meadowmount) where I have been exposed to many different teachers. The best teachers I've had focus on establishing fundamentals regarding posture and mechanics. Consistent with that, Chy has a deep knowledge of how to address those fundamental issues, which (at least in my experience) crop up in beginning and very advanced students alike. For that reason, I would recommend Chy for a student of any ability who is looking for a fresh perspective.

One last thought regarding online lessons: I am somewhat old-school because I used to make the ritualistic weekly commute to my violin and piano instructors. But, much to my delight, I have found that FaceTime is an excellent way to take lessons from Chy and does not appear to impede the instruction at all.

I really appreciate your candor as to how to improve my acting. I never feel as if you're being judgmental when your giving me advise.
I'm glad you;re working with me.
Sometime, I'd like to take time with you to talk about acting possibilities in
Bowling Green or the Toledo area.
Thanks again.

Working with Chy was an amazing, and fun experience. Not only has taught me so much about proper singing technique and proper breath support, but he has also broadened my understanding of the human voice as an instrument in general. I have very much enjoyed taking lessons from him and continue to practice everything that he has taught me in my day-to-day life.

Chy Billings studied voice with me for three years at Wichita State University, and is one of the most talented students I have ever had. During that time, he was a graduate teaching assistant for two years. Chy not only sings beautifully and intelligently, he is a fine teacher as well. I recommend him without reservation.

Chy was a GTA for Wichita State; I direct the Voice and Opera area. His students all raved about how kind, knowledgeable and attentive he was. He taught singers who were interested in music theatre, opera, church music and popular music. All were equally enthusiastic about his teaching. He has my enthusiastic recommendation.
