*** NEW POLICIES ***
I'm currently only taking students that can commit to weekly lessons. I no longer allow 24-hr cancellations, which is a policy Takelessons promotes, but I don't find it useful for the teacher or the student. If you'll be out of town, I allow 4 cancellations per year. I also take off these dates: July 4, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, and December 24 - January 1. If you need to reschedule for another reason, I will try to find another time during that week for your lesson, but if it's an exceptionally busy week I may not be able to find a time-slot. You will still be obligated to pay for the lesson.
*** Bio ***
I have an MFA in Music Composition and Piano Performance from California Institute of the Arts and a BA in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara. I began piano at the age of 7 and composition at age 15. Teaching has always been important to me. I started providing lessons in high school and learned that giving musical knowledge is just as important as acquiring the skills it takes to be a musician. Studying with me will help you become a well-rounded musician with the ability to play the type of music you want to play.
Constantly composing, film scoring, and performing, I'm a very active musician that works with classical musicians, rock musicians, and everything in between. I teach a variety of instruments and will cater lessons to your styles and interests. I'm also a recording artist and work with music software such as Ableton Live, Native Instruments, and Sibelius. I would love to teach you how to compose and record your own music in whichever genre you prefer.
*** Lesson Details ***
Many of my students have studied music in the past, but weren't able to keep the passion. I pride myself as a very enthusiastic teacher that works hard at making lessons fun and interesting for any age and background. All of my students (from 3 years old to 60 years old) enjoy music and practice very hard. You will be provided with a solid foundation in theory, aural skills, technique, and creativity, giving you the ability to carve your own path in music. You will learn the correct way to play your instrument and develop the intuition to command it expressively.
I started teaching piano lessons in 2005 and have expanded to composition, accordion, ukulele, guitar, didgeridoo, and music recording.

I've been studying ukulele with Chris for a year and a half now. I went from absolutely no background in music to really being able to play the instrument pretty quickly. Chris has the patience of Job and a real ability to explain music and playing technique in a way that is incredibly easy to understand. I learn something new every week and he can teach as quickly or as slowly as I want to learn that week. If he can teach me to play, he can teach you to play!+ Read More
Great first lesson. Looking forward to the next.
I've learned SO much, even after my first lesson with Christoffer. He's exceedingly patient and encouraging and always finds a way to explain things in a way that make sense. Can't recommend more highly.
Loved the energy and enthusiasm Christoffer brought! My 9 year old was really nervous but hasn't stopped talking about the lesson over an hour later!
My first lesson with Christoffer went by so fast! We were having a lot of fun and he challenged me in all the right ways. Can't wait for the next lesson!
Very patient teacher. Made good points about technique. Looking forward to next lesson
Good start to re-engaging the piano.
Chris is an amazing instructor! I left there feeling more confident about playing than I have ever felt before and am excited to continue classes!
Christoffer has been a terrific instructor - I'm amazed at how quickly he has me playing.
Great lesson. This was my first time putting on an accordion in over 30 years and Christoffer had me reading music by the end of my first 30 minute lesson.
Chris is a great teacher. I worked with him at CalArts. He has a highly diverse range of skills as an instrumentalist and composer. He works in various musical styles fluently (from film scoring, songwriting, instrumental and vocal writing, to electronic music). A friendly and pleasant teacher to work with—he is very good at meeting the student at his/her level and helping them with their own individual artistic goals/needs. I highly recommend him as a teacher to anyone wanting to develop their musical skills.+ Read More
Chris knows his stuff about music for sure. He is a very nice and friendly guy, and chill. He works around your schedule and musical wants. I decided to try and learn the accordion, and started with absolutely no experience. Within 2 months (7 lessons or so) I was crankin' that thing like a pro.+ Read More
it's all great
Christopher S. is highly knowledgeable, patient and easy to grasp as a teacher. He knows his stuff! I would recommend him to anyone interested in learning how to play the uke or any other instrument.
I took lessons with Chris for about a year while at Calarts. I've dabbled around with piano but I definitely wasn't very good and Chris taught me the proper techniques in a fun and comfortable environment. I highly recommend him as a teacher! Thanks Chris!
Great Teacher and Musician
Met Chris in college and have known him since. He has knowledge and experience playing and writing music in a bunch of different styles. Very creative and fun personality all around. Great dude. Take lessons with him you won't regret it.
unpretentious intuitive guy
i had the opportunity to work with chris on a concert\theater piece that he wrote and co-directed called "Kingdoms." for the better part of a school year chris 'taught' me and four others the piece and i was allowed a valuable glimpse of qualities most would look for in a teacher - chris had a knack for simplifying complex material and engaging us over the occasionally grueling rehearsals. also i will say he was never late and basically never annoyed with the group's fluctuating schedule. like i said - unpretentious, intuitive, smarty-pants - overall nice guy and good teacher.
Chris is a knowledgeable musician and great teacher!
Chris is a great musician who is versed in numerous different styles. Having met whilst studying Music in College, we proceeded to play together in many ensembles and I have often turned to him when in need of a helping hand or critiquing ear. He is a great tutor, musician and friend.
Great teacher and piano player!
Lesson are fun and I learn a lot. Cool songs! He's a very knowledgeable teacher and explains things very clearly.
Very good teacher! Chris is very skilled with the accordion and has lots of patience for beginners! Lessons are held in the garage, which has been adapted into his studio. It could be cleaner feeling, but it's also nice because i don't feel like my practice is bothering anyone. My favorite thing about Chris's teaching style is that he always incorporates 10-15 mins of improvisation once we have gone through the new songs and notes each lesson. As difficult as this is as a beginning player, starting this early definitely helps build confidence in my ability to play melodichly . Overall, Chris is a fantastic teacher whom I would recommend to Beginers and advanced musicians alike
