The most important aspect of vocal training that I will emphasize is breath control and support. Connecting to the body when singing will ensure vocal protection and prevent any unwanted vocal strain. Once we have worked on technique through various scales and breathing exercises, I will teach them how to apply these elements of singing to their repertoire. When we work on repertoire, I try to alternate between technical practice and artistic expression. I want to make sure the student is having fun, communicating their art, and discovering their own unique artistic identity, which I believe to be the most important aspect of being a singer! I will provide my students with new challenges each week and help them to gain new tools to practice healthily and efficiently.

About Christina E.

My name is Christina and I am a professional singer. Alongside singing, I have 7 years of teaching experience in schools, and private studio lessons. I specialize in opera but also sing and teach a wide variety of genres as well! I completed my Bachelor of Arts in music at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) graduating with high honors under full academic scholarship, and have recently completed a Masters of Musical Performance at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). At UCLA I was the recipient of a Graduate Fellowship Award, Fritz Altman Scholarship, Shapiro Scholarship, and was one of the Mimi Feldman Scholarship Competition winners.

Opera singing was a surprise in my life that I discovered in college. Because I was a self taught pop singer, transitioning into classical singing was very challenging at first. Throughout this transition, I learned the amazing benefits of initially pursuing a more classical technique such as breath control and efficient resonance production. These elements and many other aspects of classical training can establish a healthy foundation. Once one gains a healthy foundation, it is easier and generally safer to experiment with the voice in a way that isn't damaging.

I do prefer to teach a classical method, but am flexible to what each student wants to learn and cater my lessons to the unique needs of each student. Many pop singers train with a classical technique and this training does not mean that students will sound operatic.

Alongside singing, I believe basic knowledge in piano is extremely beneficial in improving musicality and an understanding of each piece. Piano greatly improves sight reading and ones ability to learn music quickly and efficiently. It can allow one to develop an understanding of harmony and context within each unique piece of music. Regarding voice, piano can help a singer become more independent with learning music and practicing on their own.

I would love to help and guide those interested in music. I want to share the great joy it brings me with others and pass down what I have learned over the years. I have completed courses in music pedagogy and education alongside my degrees, and believe in shaping my lessons around each individual's learning style so that each student may continue to grow while having fun. Helping each student develop their own unique musical identity is one of the main goals with these lessons.

Mexican-American mezzo-soprano Christina Esser has been noted for her “rich mezzo”, and “captivating performances” (The Desert Sun). This season, Ms. Esser will make her New York debut as a Young Artist with the Dell’arte Opera Ensemble performing the role of Giovanna Seymour in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena. Recent roles include Hermia in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Nights Dream with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, the title role in a world premiere workshop reading of Juana by Carla Lucero and Mrs. Krawcyck in Janice Hamer’s Lost Childhood with Opera UCLA, and Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro as well as The Monitress in Suor Angelica with Repertory Opera Company.

In 2020, Ms. Esser was selected as one of nine finalists (both instrumental and vocal) to compete in the prestigious Hennings-Fischer Burbank Philharmonic Young Artist Competition. She has also been a featured young artist with the Palm Springs Opera Guild, and in May, will return as a guest teaching artist in their education outreach tour, “Opera in the Schools”.

A versatile artist, Ms. Esser also excels in standard concert works. She has been a featured soloist with the Santa Ynez Master Chorale and Orchestra performing Schubert’s Mass in G, as well as the featured soloist with the Idyllwild Master Chorale and Orchestra concert series, singing selections from Handel’s Messiah.

In 2018, Ms Esser attended the International Vocal Academy in Payerbach, Austria where she studied with world-renowned baritone Vladimir Chernov and bel canto expert Olga Toporkova. The following summer, she was a participant in the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival where she worked with soprano Jennifer McGregor and conductor Paul Floyd.

I enjoyed working with Christina. She was very adept at identifying areas in my vocal skills that could use some improvement and then offered solutions to that end. She also happens to be an extremely talented singer. I definitely recommend her services and look forward to working with her again.

Our 10 year old daughter Indigo has been taking lessons with Christina for about 9 months. We are stopping for the summer as life is too busy, but Christina has taken Indigo's voice from one that mimics whatever she hears, and trained her to sing with her own voice in the most pure way. She just performed at her school talent show and was the star, thanks to Christina's encouragement, expertise and understanding of how a child's voice should develop have helped my daughter find her voice and shine xx

Christina is the best! I took singing lessons from her last year on a whim because it's someThing I had always wanted to try. She is a wealth of knowledge and every time I went to her was so impressed to hear my singing improve every week thanks to the clear cut direction she would provide to me. She has a wonderful personality and Id recommend her to anyone looking for musical training.
Christina, you sound amazing in your video on here singing opera- simply earth shattering and powerful sound! Still working on breaking the sound barrier over here haha

Christina rocks!!!! She helped me find my voice. I'm an older (some could say senior 😀) student. I never had any formal training. In one lesson she had me singing 100 times better. Surprisingly, I'm getting even better as the lessons progress. I started out watching Videos online which helped me, but at some point you need a professional to hear your voice.
I am the cantor at church, so I am so thankful for Christina and her focused direction. I think the congregation is thankful for her as well 😀. Love you Christina and thanks for helping me find my voice.

This was my 5 year old son's very first time taking singing lessons and we couldn't be more pleased! Christina didn't force him into it when he started out shy, rather found a song he loved and started singing it herself until he felt comfortable chiming in. So great! We're so excited for next week!!

Christina was lovely with my 10 year old daughter. She was encouraging, yet kept her persevering to get out of bad habits to reach the best vocal range. First lesson and we were worried about doing it online, but it was absolutely perfect. xx

Christina is a truly wonderful vocal coach. She's not only knowledgeable and competent as a teacher, but she's very personable and warm which inspires excitement for learning and honing your instrument. Her teaching style creates a relaxed, but useful experience. She's sensitive to working with the specificities of your voice and style/genre while also creating a healthy foundation of classical training. I highly recommend Christina for any singer!

I highly recommend my colleague and friend Christina as a musician and teacher. Her style of teaching is quite effective because she is passionate, knowledgeable, talented, and quite fun and friendly. Because she has been so dedicated to honing her own craft (She practices and works incredibly hard), she can break down and clarify technique in a way that is informative, relatable, and inspiring.

I've had the great opportunity of knowing Christina while studying in Santa Barbara. I have never met anyone with more passion for music. After recently having a voice lesson with her, I can say that her passion has only increased since graduating from UCSB. Her enthusiasm and respect for the craft is refreshing and inspiring. She is very quick to adapt her teaching style to match her students' needs. If you're considering taking lessons with Christina, know that you will be in good hands.

She brings great energy to anything and everything she does, and always works incredibly hard. It's heartwarming finding someone who can bring such a delightful exuberance to the table.

I had two piano instructors before Christina and neither were nearly as good. She has a great way of explaining things that keeps the process simple, yet effective. She's also the only piano teacher I've had that kept the whole learning process fun. I was able to learn a lot from her I would definitely recommend contacting her and setting up an appointment!

I can honestly say I've never seen anyone with so much passion and dedication to music as Christina. She matches her passion and talent in patience and kindness. You rarely see her without a smile on her face that is bound to inspire her students. I highly reccommend her as a music teacher!
