- Teaches students:
- Ages 5+ and special needs
- Teaching since:
Hi! I am myself a Deaf native ASL user who has background in acting, filmmaking and science/IT. My teaching experience started way back in the 2000s where I have been teaching students of all ages occasionally and am now aiming to transform this skill into a full time job.
My teaching is very unique because it aims to teach you more than the language itself. When you learn a language you need to get into the overall mentality of those who speaks the language. This means, there are cultural aspects and modalities; such as how you perceive the world within this language. The language does not only bring new perspectives/mindsets but also has its benefits depending on when/where the language is used. In this case, American Sign Language (ASL) would, as examples, enable you to become more adept at Visio-spatial tasks (see Deaf Gain) or give you an advantage when Scuba diving!
As “holistic” teacher, I would teach you how to think and express like an ASL pro! I never forgot the first student, back in the early years of teaching ASL, whom I proudly brought to a Deaf school was shocked when the students couldn’t believe that he was not a native Deaf (ASL user)!
In addition, since I am a traveller, I am accustomed to all type of backgrounds and am open to teach any type of students.
Assets: I can lipread and I am a Gallaudet University graduate! I also know and can teach Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ) , or any elementary/high school subjects to native ASL users.
