Teaching Locations:
My teaching style is a blend of all the teaching philosophies that I've encountered over the years. I emphasize good technique and a holistic approach to cello playing, as I believe those two are the foundation to building musicality. However, I believe the ultimate goal is to simply instill a love for music into my students and to encourage them to have fun. I look forward to making music with you soon!
About Cecelia S.
I'm a professional orchestra cellist, chamber musician, and a Suzuki certified teacher. I graduated from the University of Michigan, where I earned both my Bachelor and Master of Music with Anthony Elliott and Richard Aaron, respectively. I have played with the Grand Rapids Ballet, the Jackson Symphony, and the Ann Arbor Symphony. As an educator, I have taught at various El-Sistema inspired programs, such as the Paterson Music Project and the Michigan Artist Citizen program. Currently, I am a cellist in various chamber groups and am teaching students of a variety of ages, skill, and commitment levels.
With my style of teaching, students can expect to improve each week. I believe it's the teacher's job to alleviate practice frustration, which is why I pack each lesson with practice techniques, exercises, and smart practice tips. I am also a firm believer in teaching students how to play cello without any tension. After having suffered a few injuries of my own, I turned to the Alexander Technique and trained for a year, which helped immensely with the pain. Now, I take those same concepts and infuse them into my lessons, with the goal of making cello playing easy, fun, and pain-free.
I look forward to meeting you and to start cello-ing together soon!
