​Carrie’s teaching was transformational for my musical growth. I am primarily an oboist, and after playing around on clarinet for a while I decided I wanted to study it more seriously. Carrie’s was the first name in my mind. I knew of her playing skills already from being at UofL at the same time and there was no one else I wanted to learn from. I am so glad I sought her out, as she provided me with a rock-solid foundation for further clarinet study. Though I was only able to study with her for a few months, she lead me to grow musically far more than I thought possible. ​Carrie’s teaching style is very direct yet warm and friendly. I was never afraid to make a mistake, and I knew that each mistake I made would be an opportunity for her to help me improve. She always made sure that any questions I had were thoroughly answered, and I always felt comfortable sharing things I was unsure of or that I knew I needed to be better at. She is a very charismatic person and effortlessly builds rapport with students. Because of this, I was always very comfortable with her critique of my playing. She was very practical in ensuring that all the fundamentals were well understood, and constantly connected back to them as I progressed. ​I am pursuing my teaching certificate in music education now and so much of what I learned with Carrie I use with my clarinet students and all my students generally. She is simply a fantastic teacher, clarinetist, and person.
