Hello! I'm Carolyn Smith and I love being involved in my students progress. Helping my students find their true voice and helping them build power, versatiity, strength, and range is very exciting With all my singers I teach from an understanding of how the voice works and help my students to understand their voice. With this approach to vocal technique my students are able to sing in all major styles including musical theater, rock, pop, and classical literature. I am a very supportive and patient teacher and encourage my students to explore their voice while helping them maintain healthy vocal habits to avoid straining and abuse. When teaching singing, I especially enjoy diagnosing any problems with the voice and working together to solve them.

Since 1988, I have been teaching voice to individuals and groups in my private studio. I have a masters degree in vocal music and drama and a bachelor's degree in vocal music from the prestigious School of Music at University of North Texas. I studied advanced vocal pedagogy with Joan Wall at TWU, and music education with Hildegard Frohlich at UNT. Even after my degrees I continued to study voice with Bil Bauer in Dallas, Texas, and have taught at universities in New Mexico, Missouri, and New Zealand. I hold vocal music teaching certificates in Texas, Missouri, and New Zealand. Most recently I have earned a certificate from the Contemporary Commerical Music Institute in Virginia.

All of my teaching for takelessons.com occurs online. My adult students choose their songs ( I believe it's very important to work on the style of music the student enjoys and intends to pursue) with my guidance and decide if they want to include sight singing and ear training as part of their vocal education. With children, I use a fun approach to building basic vocal skills and musicianship, including tongue twisters, fun songs, technique songs, rhythm games, voca exploration, and melodic development.

I'm so looking forward to working with you!
