As a well qualified and experienced violin teacher (teaching privately since 2007), I work with students in many different ways to help achieve goals and ensure enjoyment and success. Individualized lesson plans are created to cater to the needs and goals of each student. I strive in every lesson to integrate multiple focal points such as the development of proper technique, ear training, music reading, music theory, and musicianship.

About Carolyn A.

I’ve been self-employed since 1990 and am a professional violin teacher, violinist, and luthier (building, repair, and maintenance of string instruments). I am an active orchestral musician and have played with the Northland Symphony Orchestra for 30+ seasons (that’s a lot of notes). I graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelors of Music Education with an emphasis on the violin. I’m a graduate of Red Wing Technical Institute’s Musical Instrument Repair and Building program.

My passion is teaching violin students from beginning through intermediate levels. I’ve started many children and have given many adults their first lesson on violin. As a private teacher, I develop individualized lesson plans for each student. Lessons are sure to include humor and patience while areas such as developing proper technique in an ergonomically friendly way, developing effective practice skills, gaining knowledge of music theory as it applies to the violin, learning to read music, developing ear training, and playing musically are learned. I strive to “fill in all the holes” which are the gaps in knowledge and technique that can limit progress and enjoyment.

In 2016 I started a string ensemble in Gladstone, Mo for adult students to have a place to play and learn the skills required to play in an ensemble. This is a fun success on many levels as it gives an opportunity to learn to match bowing styles and rhythm, work on intonation as a group, and create lasting friendships.

I look forward to meeting you, hearing your goals and aspirations on violin, and helping you achieve them!

Carolyn is a great teacher who learns each student’s strengths and weaknesses and is able to create lessons based on individual needs. She has the ability to make learning to play more fun than work.🙂

I have taken private and ensemble lessons with Carolyn for many years, both in person and recently via Skype. She is an excellent, professional teacher and musician, tailoring each lesson to my ability and learning style. Her sense of humor and can-do spirit are real motivators. Whenever I have an issue with my instrument, Carolyn's knowledge and experience as a luthier fix the problem so the it does not become a roadblock. As an older student, I would say that if you've ever wanted to learn to play the violin, do it! Carolyn can get you started (or continue) on the path to violin playing enjoyment.

I have been taking violin lessons from Carolyn Alter for 10 months, so I am still very new at this. For the past 4 weeks, we have been doing the lessons on line using Skype. I did not know how this would work at first, but the on line lessons are extremely convenient and very easy to do. We can talk back and forth just as if we were in the same room. Also, the lessons can be recorded so I can review them later if I’m having difficulties with a certain piece. The ability to go back over the lesson as often as I need to helps remind me of the instructions/corrections offered by Carolyn during the lesson. I suppose you could call it a lesson on demand. I believe you could do the on line lesson even if you never had an in-person lesson because, again, it’s just like you’re in the same room. Carolyn is an excellent teacher. She really knows what she is doing so she is able to give clear easy to understand instructions. I don’t think you will be disappointed at all if you take on line lessons from her.

I have been taking violin lessons from Carolyn for many years in her home. Her musical knowledge is deep and broad, and she shows me the what, how, and why of being a violinist. You can learn how to play with Carolyn. She has also efficiently and easily transitioned to online lessons, making it easy for me to do the same. With humor and grace in the electronic age, Carolyn is still helping me become a better violinist. She is a kind, patient, smart, excellent teacher in person or online.
