In middle school, I began taking French instead of Spanish because I wanted to be different. By the time I reached college, I knew I wanted to be proficient in at least one foreign language - so I ended up majoring in it, and spending two years in Paris during graduate school. Languages are fun, and I hope to help my students discover this, too! Look out also for my blog articles in French on the TakeLessons blog.

About Beth L.

I earned my BA in French with a minor in math from Pomona College, followed by a Masters in French Language Education from the Sorbonne University in Paris and a Masters in Library Information Science from San Jose State University. During the traditional school year, I work in an elementary school library. I also worked for six years as a middle and high school librarian and English, ESL, and history teacher.

I began teaching private violin and viola lessons in the beginning of 2012. I have completed violin pedagogy trainings for Suzuki violin books one through four with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

"If you’re interested in learning a foreign language, whether it’s just for fun or for career prospects, you’ll need to put in some time and effort — there’s no way around that!"

Mrs. Jen has been a violin teacher for our daughter for 3.5 years. She is an extremely qualified and talented musician who deeply cares about her students and is committed to teaching. She is kind and patient, but also effective and motivating. When our 8 year old daughter learned Mrs. Jen was moving she said, "I probably will never have as neat or special of a violin teacher as Mrs. Jen"- and she's right!

First lesson was fine. We took a few minutes to find each other in a cafe setting but as it was also a meet and greet session I wasn't too concerned about time. As it turns out Beth more than made up the time. She's very pleasant and easy to speak with. We went over my goals, simple traveler type words, phrases and questions, and a work schedule to cover the next several weeks. Beth told me how she was going to approach teaching me after listening to my goals. I'm looking forward to the next session where we can focus on learning the language.

Beth works in a middle and high school and teaches violin there after school. Beth is a very nice and professional violin teacher who is very patient with her students. She can find the students' technical problems and deal with them quickly. I like Beth very much as a teacher.
