Why Choose Carla:
• Work on your singing in a warm, friendly and private studio with an experienced teacher that makes singing fun! Students of all ages are always welcome!
• Member of the National Association For Teachers of Singing (the only selective professional organization for Voice Teachers) whose mission is: To encourage the highest standards of the vocal art and of ethical principles in the teaching of singing; and to promote vocal education and research at all levels, both for the enrichment of the general public and for the professional advancement of the talented.
• Voice students learn more then just how to sing, they learn how to be performers and musicians.
• I will not take on a student I cannot help.
• Voice students have MANY performance opportunities offered to them that are appropriate for their level.
My unique studio uses the basics of Bel Canto technique to teach all styles of music to all ages. Parents often comment on how much fun their students have in lessons, while getting feedback from outside professionals (adjudicators, directors, etc) on how much their technique has improved. Adult students are commonly shocked by how easy singing can feel as they meet their career goals.
Current students can be seen performing with:
America's Got Talent!
Hardrock Cafe LAS VEGAS!
Puget Sound Concert Opera
Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan
5th Avenue Theater
Hwy 99 Blues Club
I realize that voice lessons can be REALLY scary and I totally understand why, especially for kids and beginners! I do my best to use modern psycology and technology to help my beginning students feel confortable in what can be a frightening new endeavor.
Personal Performance Experience: Extensive lead and supporting opera performing experience with Bellevue Opera, Puget Sound Concert Opera, Skagit Opera, Tacoma Opera, Portland Opera,Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan, Seattle Opera and Seattle Youth Symphony. Prior to that spent 7 years performing Jazz and Gospel and 10 years in musical theater.
Personal Education: BA in Music from Seattle Pacific University 2002, MM in Opera Performance (Unfinished due to 1 year of German) at University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
Teaching Experience: 8 years as a private voice teacher in my own studio, 3.5 years teaching opera workshops throughout the USA, 2 years working in studio with local bands as a 'fixer.'
Have you tried lessons before and felt unsuccessful?
Not all students learn the same way and for years voice teachers have been treating every student as an aural learner. What I have found is that students with a history of struggling with matching pitch simply need to be taught in a different manner. That is why I now ask students to take a voluntary learning style inventory prior to their first lesson.
Visual Learner? Not a problem when "Adam" started with me he could only match pitch 30% of the time. But after finding that he needed to see concepts in order to learn them I have now made all of his lesson visually based and he is now averaging 90% pitch accuracy 3 months later.
Kinisthetic Learner? I had the hardest time helping "Clark" learn new music until we realized that by taking the time to have him play his parts himself on the piano he could learn them in minutes. He just is a person that learns by doing and now that we know that, music has become so much less frustrating for him.
Physical Learner? With "Steve" the traditional 'visualization' style of teaching that most voice teachers start with just wasn't helping him improve his sound and reach the high notes we both knew he had. After we figured out that he needed large muscle movements to understand concepts I added the use of a resistance band to his lessons. He has had so much success with this technique that he 'stole' my resistance band so he could use it in recording sessions and before he got on stage.
The stories just go on and on.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students help structure their lessons by providing a general overview of their goals during their first lesson. Just as not everyone's voice sounds the same, neither does everyone's lesson!
A typical lesson begins with vocal warm-ups specifically targeted to strengthen the students technique and help them learn more about their voices capabilities. Next students work on songs of their choosing, that help them develop the freedom of voice, control, stamina and overall vocal health that they will need to be confident in their performing.
Additional opportunities for performance are provided for students as desired. These may include Karaoke Nights (for adult beginners), no-stress recitals, studio sing-a-longs, community choirs and small roles in local productions.

Specializing in helping young singers find their voices and learn healthy technique so as to not damage their instrument, while having a lot of fun! I also teach Spanish, Latin and Italian Diction for Singers.
I have worked with many local guitar/singer/songwriters and rock band frontmen, helping them gain the stamina and power they need while maintaining their instrument for the future.
Also, I have had extensive experience and success working with students who consider themselves 'tone challenged'
Founded in 1944, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Inc. (NATS) is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world with more than 7,000 members worldwide.
Extremely great teacher that has given so much improvement to my voice and skills!
Carla is a teacher who focuses on each individual student. I have observed the results of her students’ success in multiple music genres. I have studied with Carla for classical training, musical theater, jazz, and audition prep, and have seen positive results in each of these areas. Carla really works to make sure her students gain experience (she often arranges public performance opportunities at venues such as coffee shops, etc.) and she makes sure her students are aware of (and prepared for) upcoming auditions. Each lesson is followed up with an email from Carla re-capping the main points stressed in that lesson. I highly recommend Carla, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned performer.Show More
I’ve been working with Carla for several years. Over that time, I’ve had the opportunity to explore several vocal styles - jazz, musical theater, classical - and have performed on stage and even won a competition.
She’s patient with my desire to learn different ways of singing. She’s taught me how to control my voice so I can sing straight tone or float my high notes. I am always impressed by how well she can explain techniques to the average person so you can actually translate it into a really cool sound.
I’ve been so impressed, my children now take lessons and are having success at community auditions. I highly recommend Carla for her ability to work with all ages, levels, and styles.
Carla is an amazing teacher. I started going to her when I was 13 I think and I stayed with her until I graduated high school and moved to my university where I am majoring in musical theatre, which she helped me get into because of the training I received from her over the years. She is so good at helping me find pieces that fit my voice and soundShow More

1st teacher to identify my problem!
I have struggled w/ my break/passagio for sometime and would work on a song with my high range for 1-2months and then loose my voice on performance. Carla imediatly identified my problem and knows exactly how to fix it. I have been seeing improvement the past few weeks. What more can I ask for!
Carla has taken my singing ablility to an entirely new level
Hello,My name is Ashley Gangadean, and I have been taking lessons through take lessons with Carla Halderbrand for about two months. I wanted to take the time to say that she has helped me on multiple levels and has progressed my singing ability to an entirely new level. She is a true gem in the world of vocal teachers and you are lucky to have her on board! I wish that I could continue to take lessons with her, however, I am facing financially burdening times. I know that as soon as I am in a better position, I will be contacting you to get lessons from Carla undoubtedly! Thank you again for networking me to Carla H. It has been a pleasure working with her!Sincerely,Ashley Gangadean
Great teacher for adults
As an adult beginning singer, sometimes unlearning bad habits is as important as learning new ones. Carla has been great at helping me with this. She has helped me to relax while singing and has taught me a lot of good technique. Best of all she is a fun and engaging person who is a pleasure to interact with.
Just a note to let you know how pleased I am with my vocal coach, Carla H. in Seattle. She has not only improved my confidence level be has given me the skills to noticeably improve my range and tone. I am now returning to performing professionally after 12 yrs. of inactivity.Thank you Carla!
energetic and funny!
She was fabulous! When Hannah is ready to start lessons again we would certainly use Carla! Thanks!Patty
Carla is fantastic - Elizabeth is having a wonderful time - although Elizabeth participates and enjoys many activities, I have never seen her so enthused with any one thing. She really likes Carla.
Fun Humor and Music Too
I have been having a great time learning from Carla. She is very, very patient as I struggle (at times) to go forward into a new experience. She intuitively understands where I am as I go along, is very positive in rewarding my accomplishments. Homework is pertinent to what I wish to accomplish and she suggests things like going to Compline and the opera to more fully grasp the nature of music. Sort of like a one person field trip! I continue to look forward to each new lesson and I feel very positive about myself and my abilities because of her teaching method, personality, and her complete grasp of the subject matter.
