Most people think of Songwriting as a flat straight forward activity. Keep it 3 min., stay in the accepted framework, be sure to rhyme in the right places, don't use clichés.., I look at the norm as an opportunity and a challenge. How do you write a great song but push the envelope? My favorite thing is when I take a cliché and stand it on its ear "The early bird catches the worm" can become "He said somethin' 'bout an early bird when he got me out of bed" Why waste a great line like that because someone said don't use a cliché.
