I've been teaching cello for 10 years and my students have gone on to participate in All-State orchestra, and play in professional orchestras. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to produce sound and play simple songs and as time goes on you'll be able to read music fluently and perform with ease. I specialize in Classical, and typically use Suzuki and Klengal scale books. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Byron H.

I love music. I love it so much that I have made it my career. I have been playing the cello for over 20 years and have studied in universities since 2002. In that time, I have worked extensively with great artists such as, Rhonda Rider, Joel Krosnick, Andy Mark, Nicholas Tzavares, and Mark Steinberg. I have taught students of all ages and abilities from beginners to University students. I perform regularly and have played in New York, Boston, Texas, Arizona, Banff, Montreal, and Hamburg. I have played in orchestras, professional String quartets, Piano trios, and as a soloist. I can play a wide range of styles from baroque to modern cello music, as well as Pop and Rock music. I have also played rock and jazz solos as a member of the Zappa cover band Bogus Pomp. I strive to give my students top tier training. by focusing on ear training and technique, I can create adaptable healthy musicians that can learn quickly and work well in professional situations with or without sheet music.

I'm an adult and I've been working with Byron for 5 months now. We've worked in person and now through video during quarantine. It's been a great experience and I would surely recommend him!

I had no experience with string instruments and feel I'm on my way to playing the cello competently. Byron keeps things fun and moving along at a good pace. He's especially good at diagnosing the cause of any difficulties I'm having.

Honestly could not ask for a better teacher. I was struggling to find a teacher in the area and boy did I pretty much hit the jackpot. Great teacher, super intelligent and understanding. I am a beginner but would highly recommend him to anyone. Not only does Byron play beautifully but he knows exactly what and how to teach you. Im always excited for my next lesson, so you should contact him and set one up too!

He is an awesome instructor. He teaches the details that have really made a difference in my playing and has made it easier to practice. I like the fact that he is able to explain clearly what to do, why it should be done a particular way, and great visual explanations that help me understand what I need to do.

Experience

Soloist
Feb 2003 - Present

Self-employed

I had my first major solo performance in 2003 as the winner of the Imperial Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition. I performed The Elgar concerto with a full orchestra, and from that moment I was hooked. Over the years I have had over 20 solo and collaborative performances ranging from Solo Bach cello suites to Louis Andriessen's "La Voce" A piece that requires me to sing and speak Italian while playing. being a soloist requires preparation, attention to detail, and nerves of steel. All of these things can be learned, and I can now teach them.

Cellist
Aug 2012 - Aug 2018

The Julius Quartet

For six years I was the cellist for the Julius String Quartet. In that time I had the privilege of studying string quartet playing at the highest level with members of the Julliard Quartet, The Brentano Quartet, and The Escher Quartet. We worked in a residence position with the Shanghai Quartet at Montclair State University and With Rhonda Rider at the Boston conservatory. We performed in many venues including The Bing Center at Stanford University, Rolston Hall in Banff, Canada, and a full recital at Carnegie Hall.
