    About Brett W.

I began playing guitar when I was fourteen years old starting with acoustic guitar and shortly there after began playing electric as well. My initial musical interests ranged from rock, classic rock, jam band, jazz, folk, bluegrass and acoustic artists. The styles of music I continue to explore are across the board. My interest in David Grisman and the eclectic style of music his band had the ability to play led me to begin playing the mandolin at the age of seven-teen. Collectively I have been playing music for 18. Educationally I have studied music in various settings, exploring different styles, with different approaches. In the beginning I taught myself to read tablature and basic theory. After studying different styles and artists I took my formal music education a step farther while attending Florida State. Completing three music courses at the University, receiving an A in each, included the history of jazz 1 and 2 in addition to the introduction to music theory. The music theory course covered the reading of traditional written music, intervals, chord structure, melody, and composition. After transferring to the University of Florida I became involved with Jacare Brazil playing the mandolin, an acoustic ensemble exploring Choro or Brazilian folk music. This was clearly the most challenging, yet rewarding musical experience of my life. Along with the speed and learning of the pieces the rhythmic feel of the Brazilian music was unlike anything I had attempted to play. After months of rehearsal and practice our ensemble toured Florida playing four shows ending in Gainesville performing before a sold-out crowd of 1500 people. As far as teaching I love working with people, kids to adults alike. I am punctual, respectful, and patient. Learning new material and ideas to convey to the students is consistently exciting, fun, and challenging. *** Lesson Details *** As a teacher I would describe myself as easy going, but I try to always be a motivating presence towards my students to push themselves to improve. As far as a set curriculum I feel I need to open and flexible to teach the way each individual wants to be taught. This depends on skill level and musical interests. For someone just starting out the first few months of lessons will include learning chords, rhythm, technique, theory, and composition. *** Studio Equipment *** The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room which includes guitars, mandolin, electric guitar, amp and seating. 1 dog kept separate. Parking out front. *** Travel Equipment *** I expect the student to have their own instrument whether it be guitar (acoustic / electric) or mandolin. *** Specialties *** Song writing, acoustic, improvising, chord structure, a little jazz, rock, blues.
