    About Bob H.

I have 40 years of Music Educational experience. Starting with a B.A. in Music Education and a B.S. in Music Composition & Theory. Both degrees are from Eastern Washington University. I had the pleasure of teaching at King's Schools in Seattle, and Christ the King Academy in Poulsbo, Washington with a total of 8 years between the two. This included teaching Beginning and Intermediate Band classes for Elementary students. Band classes for the Jr. High and High School, Jazz Ensembles, Brass Ensembles, Orchestra and String Ensembles. I also taught Choir for Elementary, Jr. High and High School, along with a special Vocal Ensemble. Another fun thing I got to do was also coach teams in football, baseball, gymnastics, track and golf. Since my Senior year in College I have been teaching private music lessons on many instruments. Because of my musical training, I am able to play and teach on all the Band and Orchestra instruments, including Combo instruments. Another avenue that I've been able to enjoy is playing music professionally for Music Theater and my own concerts that I call "Bob H. in Concert" where I use a combination of Music, Stand-up Comedy and Ventriloquism. I love to share what I've been able to learn through the years with all of my students and help them reach whatever goals they may have in music performance. *** Lesson Details *** I always keep my lessons fun and enjoyable with a relaxed style of teaching. I expect good results and that the student prepares for their lessons, but I don't intimidate or humiliate them in my approach. It is so easy to get discouraged while trying to learn an instrument. So I always take a positive attitude and use creative methods to keep the experience fresh. I use method books that show the information clearly that they need to know without being confusing. I like method books that show the note charts clearly and also show the proper way to play the instrument. Music theory is also introduced early in easy stages so that they can understand how to read music clearly and how to express it. After a few months with me the student will have developed a good knowledge of how their instrument works and be able to play musical pieces that are actually recognizable. At this point I am able to incorporate new and expanded exercises on their instrument so that they will enjoy playing even more. As each student progresses I like to add supplemental material so they can develop further in their musicality. Eventually I'm able to introduce the concept of improvising on their instrument and to create their own music. *** Studio Equipment *** Keyboards, Music Stand, Amplifier & Sound System. *** Travel Equipment *** I purchase learning material, but have the customer reimburse me for the cost. I expect students to have their own instrument. I am able to help people find where to rent or purchase instruments. *** Specialties *** I teach Beginning Level on all the instruments listed, except on Trombone and Harmonica I also teach Intermediate to Advanced levels. I am able to instruct in the styles of Jazz, Blues, Rock, Country, Pop and Classical. I always incorporate music theory into the learning experience and move each student towards being able to read chord charts and improvise as they progress.
