Born Deaf, Chavez has used ASL as the primary language throughout her life. She attended deaf schools as well as public schools. Chavez earned her Bachelors of Science degree in ASL/Deaf Studies at University of Arizona, Masters of Science (MS) degree in Counseling Education at Western Oregon University. She is a nationally known teacher and lecturer in ASL, Deaf Culture and counseling services for the Deaf. Because of her love of language and Deaf culture, Chavez has involved herself in deaf clubs, and state/national organizations of the deaf for most of her life. Chavez has been in the field of ASL linguistics, Mental Health, Rehabilitation Counseling, and post-secondary teaching of ASL as a second language for 20 years. She is a Qualified Deaf interpreter (CDI), working towards the certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
