    About Ben T.

Hi everyone! My name is Ben and I recently moved to New York City after completing my Masters of Music degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. While in the Southeast, I had incredible success performing leading roles in musical theater and operatic repertoire. At the same time, I held a voice and piano studio of 10 students and each student saw marked improvement within just a few lessons. In the summer of 2010, I worked in Red Mountain Theatre Company’s production of The Sound of Music based out of Birmingham, AL. I performed Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte at the Harrower Summer Opera Workshop, both directed by Carroll Freeman in 2011 and 2012, where I also participated in opera scenes from Pique Dame, Lakmé, and L’Italiana in Algeri. During the Harrower Summer Opera Workshop, I received private coachings from faculty at the Juillard School, University of the Bahamas, and Maestro Frank Hube from Germany. I have performed with the Georgia State University Opera Theater as Kaspar in Amahl in the Night Visitors, Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro, Laurie in Little Women, and Peter Quint in Turn of the Screw. I also appeared as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni directed by W. Dwight Coleman at Valdosta State University. I am a recent Grand Prize-1st Place recipient of the GA-NATS Musical Theatre Award and the Graduate Level Men Classical Voice Award and I have recently returned home from a musical exchange program at Renmin University, China. As you can see, I am well versed in many different styles of performing and I will do my best to share my knowledge that I've gained from my experiences. I promise that in my lessons, you will discover your voice and have tons of fun doing it!!! *** Lesson Details *** For all lessons, I focus on a foundation of technique that starts with freedom. In all forms of performing, you have to let your body go and free yourself of any unnecessary tension. In singing, for example, we will work on freeing up tension in the throat, jaw, neck, etc. by making sure you are singing pure vowels, taking a deep and expanded breath, and letting the voice do its thing. Once we build on that foundation, we will work on artistry techniques to make you stand out as a solid performer to become the best you can be and start making your dreams come true. It is important to me that when you leave a lesson, you feel like you've accomplished something and that you have fun doing it. That is a mission of mine and I know that I can make that happen for you. In my lessons, there is no pressure to do anything you do not want to do. I want to cater to whatever you would like to accomplish in lessons. That means we can work on anything you would like to work on! Hakuna Matata! *** Studio Equipment *** At Ben's Private Studio, there will be a Yamaha Grand Piano to use. For Private Lessons, I suggest you bring a voice recorder, pencil, a bottle of water, and a three ring binder for handouts. *** Travel Equipment *** Private Lessons will only be offered at Ben's Private Studio *** Specialties *** I specialize in musical theater and operatic singing. I also specialize in choral technique.
