Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate
As a life-long pianist who picked up the accordion in college, I feel particularly equipped to teach accordion, since I remember in great detail the process of learning the instrument. I now perform and tour on accordion professionally, so I have technical proficiency and can teach anyone wanting to gain knowledge about how to play this beautiful instrument. I also have some experience playing music in a number of different styles native to the accordion, such as musette, choro, forro and klezmer.

Teaching since:

My name is Ben, and I am a full-time performing jazz pianist and accordionist based in New York City (you can learn more about my music career in my professional bio, which is included below). I have been teaching for ten years in just about every setting (from classroom to private, young to old, jazz and classical). I love teaching because I love learning how to communicate and connect with people of all different backgrounds and learning styles, and I enjoy sharing the journey of music with others and coming to understand what music means to them. Every person has a different goal, and if I can help people learn how to take manageable steps towards that goal every day, I feel I have succeeded. Hope to meet you soon!

Ben has played with the Bachiana Brasileira Orchestra at Lincoln Center (conducted by Joao Carlos Martins and featuring Dave Brubeck), as well as in Delhi, India, and at the Masten Jazz Festival (Buffalo), Richmond Jazz Festival (Richmond), Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival (Maryland) and Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival (Manhattan). He has also performed at Carnegie Hall, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, the Allen Room at Lincoln Center, Ryles Jazz Club, Webster Hall, Symphony Space, The Blue Note and a host of other locations throughout the northeast. I've taken jazz piano lessons with Ben for almost a year and I really enjoy them! He always finds new ways to explain things and suggests different exercises, even when we are working on one same tune. I always feel motivated to practice at the end of the lesson.

I have learned so much from Ben about what it is to play jazz and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Ben is not only a very talented pianist and kind human being, but he is an incredibly intuitive teacher who understands how to constructively offer suggestions for what needs to be improved but also knows how to push you to the next level (in a way that seems on the edges of what is reachable). This makes learning the piano so exciting, productive, and varied and fun. I highly recommend Ben. It is a privilege to learn from and with him.

Ben has been teaching my 11 year old son jazz piano every week and we feel so lucky to have him as a teacher. Ben is a true artist and inspired teacher and this all comes through in his lessons. It seems every time my son had a lesson, he says, “that was my best lesson with Ben ever!”
