Personally, I came to meditation after struggling mightily with major depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder into my late twenties. I worked with Dr. Norman Rosenthal, on the east coast, to keep adding tools to my personal care toolbox, even after moving to Colorado (from the gray skies of Indiana).
While in Grad School at CU, I read Doctor Rosenthal's book on Meditation, and I decided to take the plunge and find a qualified instructor to help me learn--I've been meditating twice daily, ever since.
I think the biggest hurdle for new meditators to create a sustainable practice is the "what's in it for me?" of it all...I liken it to brushing my teeth--it's not always clear until my annual checkup, why it's infinitely critical to care for my teeth, diligently twice a day. But with time and commitment, what a difference it makes.
Developing a personal meditation practice is also a lot like trying to get back into shape by attempting to run a 10K--the first month of training is an uphill battle, but if one persists, running becomes one of your best friends, in every conceivable way, indefinitely.
All this to say that my personal meditation practice continues to be a journey, especially wen I decided to I become a Certified Meditation Instructor (McLean Institute) in 2018. My hope is to provide supportive guidance and coaching (not unlike a running buddy for a 10K), in order to pay forward what my Meditation teachers have done for me--namely made my relationship to myself, my family, friends and neighbors a truly nourishing gift, daily--whatever ups and downs present themselves along the way.
If you would ever like to have a complimentary phone chat, I'd be more than happy to answer any questions or provide any additional details about the daily benefits of the Mountain Wisdom Meditation program.
warmest regards,
Ben
