About Bryan S.

Bryan teaches: Ages 9 and up
Teaching since: June 2009

I currently work as a Singer/Actor around San Diego and am a resident Music Director for SeaWorld San Diego. As an active actor and music director in San Diego I have worked with companies including Legoland, Sea World, San Diego Opera, Lyric at Birch, TAFFEE, San Diego International Fringe Festival, California Youth Conservatory, Martinis Above Fourth and have been a featured actor in two local indie films.

I have been immersed in music since the age of 5. Singing along to the radio and cassette tapes that my mom listened to in the car. I started training as a singer during my freshman year in high school and have performed in numerous musicals, concerts, and operas since.

I feel that performance is an integral part of piano and vocal education and will make sure that my students are given ample opportunity to perform, whether it be at an Open Mic Night, or I arrange a recital or musical production to nurture each of my student's performance abilities.

*** Lesson Details ***
First and foremost we need to have fun. Music is fun and so should the lessons be. When it comes to practice I recommend that students do spend time outside of the lessons practicing to ensure that they see results. If you choose to practice only while in the lesson you will get better but it will be at a slower pace.

I work with a variety of methods and concepts to ensure that I am building a solid understanding of music in my students. I work on intonation, proper breathing, sound placement, and making noise. Making noise is essential to sing. :-)

I teach classical repertoire and technique as well as Musical Theatre, Pop, Rock, Standards, Country, RnB, name it and I'll teach you how to sing it. The best part is that you will learn to sing in a manner that will not damage your instrument and will keep you singing for years to come.

Always wanted to act? I focus on helping my students build their characters, give realistic performance in a nurturing and collaborative environment. Come learn scenes, monologues and full roles to help you get the experience and skills needed to perform on stage, in film, television or commercials.

Piano students will work out of a technique book that will help build the foundation. Once basic skills are learned we will start to search out the specific music you are interested in playing. So if you love a song on the radio, keep notes and we'll learn it!

I am comfortable teaching:

Voice: Beginning to Professional
Acting: Beginning to Professional
Piano: Beginning to Intermediate
Trumpet: Beginning to Intermediate

*** Studio Equipment ***
Private office/studio in my home. Great space with great acoustics. Recording availability and internet access.

*** Specialties ***
I am not certified in any one technique but have extensive background in Speech Level Singing (SLS), classical technique, the Alexander Technique, The Body Mapping Method, and can teach Proper Musical Theatre Belting. I specialize in music from all genres and styles. I focus on developing a beautiful and unique sound for each student while maintaining a healthy, flexible voice.

I am trained in the Chubbuck Technique, Viewpoints, and Method Acting. I work with my students to better their understanding of the art of acting, and the power they have as a person and performer.

For piano lessons I am best with Beginners. I specialize in working with students who are just learning about music and want to learn the basics of piano. I am comfortable working with all ages of beginning piano student. And can work with Singing students who are interested in also accompanying themselves.

I'm not one to heap praise. In fact, I don't think I've ever written an online review at all. That being said, Bryan is a fantastic singing instructor. I started a few months ago with very limited expectations as to what I could accomplish, and I have been thoroughly amazed with the amount of progress I've made in such a short period of time. His ability to convey singing techniques through analogies and other means that are easily accessible to everyone is uncanny. Singing for me went from an embarrassing experience to one that I thoroughly enjoy, and his lessons are the highlight of my week. I absolutely recommend him to anyone interested in learning.

Singing Lessons

Bryan is great! He doesn't give up on me even when I want to give up on myself. He's attentive to body language, breathing, etc -- notices all of that. Bonnie

Bryan is an amazing instructor. I learned so much at my very first lesson about breathing techniques, posture, and how to FEEL my voice. In just 45 minutes, I felt as though I had learned so much in such a short time span. Additionally, Bryan is really great at expressing how to bring out the full potential of my voice through various exercises like breathing through my stomach and feeling my voice in my face. I am happy to have Bryan as my instructor and I really enjoy everything I've learned thus far!

What an improvement!

Bryan was really great in diagnosing and helping me fix my problem areas as a singer. He chose the most helpful warm ups and gave great feedback that helped me improve tremendously in a short period of time. He also helped me stay true to my own voice, which is exactly what I wanted. I look forward to continuing lessons with him.

Exceeded my expectations

I originally wanted to take voice lessons to help with my saxophone. My original plan was to take a half-hour lesson every two weeks. I enjoyed my first lesson so much that I am now taking weekly singing lesson. Brian is a great teacher. He explains concepts in a way that is easy to understand to a beginner lime myself. I am really looking forward to my next lesson. I feel that I have made a lot of progress in a very short time.

Lots Learned

Bryan is a great vocal instructor! I love how he uses metaphors to get me to understand each vocal concept. He is encouraging and instructive at the same time. At the end of each lesson he lets me know what we'll be working on next leaving me looking forward to our next session.

The Prodigious Tutelage of Bryan B!

I began my first lesson a month and a half ago, and in that brief time, Bryan has instilled in me the confidence I needed to push myself further. Bryan is a patient, caring, persistant teacher that leads with a gentle hand to get you to that place you never knew existed. He is always searching, past your lesson, to what will inspire and correspond to where you are. If you are looking to improve your voice, sing karaoke, audition for a musical or just not cringe from the feedback of your own ears, I highly recommend Bryan as your director or melodies!
