    About Barra B.

Hey! My name is Barra Brown and I'm a flutist, drummer, and composer living in Portland, OR. I received my B.A. in Music Performance with Honors from Lewis & Clark College in 2012. I focused on flute performance and played drums in the jazz combos while composing throughout. I've had extensive performance experience in wind ensemble, orchestra, chamber music, rock music, jazz ensembles, and some experimental music as well!! The music I'm involved in has been featured on KMHD, OPB, NPR, Jazzscene Magazine, and Portland Monthly Magazine among others. In my studies, I've had so many inspiring teachers and want to pass on the lessons and skills I've learned to you. Taking music lessons helped me learn to be focused, dedicated, and passionate about something while having a blast. I currently play drums in multiple ensembles including an indie-folk band called Alameda which is headed to Europe on their second international tour. I play with a band called Old Wave, which was recently featured on NPR's "Heavy Rotation" blog. I've also recently toured with Shook Twins, and finished up a national tour, including a sold out show at the Fillmore (west) with Ages and Ages. I also lead two ensembles, The Wishermen, an experimental jazz quintet, and the Barra Brown Quintet, a folk jazz ensemble, both of which I compose the music for. The BBQ just released an album on PJCE records this August. I really enjoy teaching lessons privately. The time one on one is very special and the teachers I've had have been so inspiring. I want to continue this sharing of music, it's beauty and power with you! Having a good teacher is invaluable, let me be yours!! *** Lesson Details *** My teaching method varies depending on the student. I understand that every student learns differently and has chosen to take lessons for a different reason. My goal is for lessons to be fun, engaging, and inspiring. I want the students to get what they came for while pushing them beyond what they thought they could accomplish. Taking music lessons helped me learn to be focused, dedicated, and passionate about something while having a blast. Lessons: -will be FUN! That is most important. -unique and tailored to your needs. -inspiring and challenging -useful and practical to what you need -learn to read and write music -tricks for playing and sounding better I ask that my students bring a notepad to write lesson goals, notes, and other discoveries. It also helps us keep track of where we are at with the lessons and where we have been. It's very helpful to visually see the progress we make together. *** Studio Equipment *** Drum set Multiple amps Guitar Piano Speakers Bass *** Specialties *** I studied classical and 20th century flute performance and theory in college performing in chamber music ensembles, wind symphony, orchestra, and as a soloist. I currently play drums professionally in multiple groups from contemporary jazz to pop rock. Flute performance Drums (all genres)
