Hello! I am a flutist, drummer, and composer who graduated from Lewis & Clark College. I received my BA in flute performance with honors and had many playing and performing opportunities there.
I was the principle flutist of the Lewis & Clark Wind Symphony and Orchestra and was the drummer for the jazz combos, winning the best composer award. I performed as a featured soloist with the orchestra and organized and performed a junior and senior flute recital. I am well versed in music from the baroque era through the 21st century and have studied and played many styles of music. As a drummer and flutist I have played with folk singers, funk bands, in jazz ensembles, experimental groups, and with chamber ensembles. I really enjoy playing different styles of music and I am very serious about making music at a high level in any genre I participate.
Being well versed in different areas of music has allowed me to experience different ways of creating music and has lead me to meet people I wouldn't have if I only played one type of music. Playing jazz as well as classical music has really informed my composing too. I am able to take ideas from the masters of both styles and blend them to create music that is truly based off of my experiences. These experiences are ones that I can't wait to share with my students!
My most recent project is with a contemporary jazz quintet The Wishermen in which I play drums and write the compositions. We recently released our debut studio album and the process of recording, mixing, and producing an album has been invaluable.
I am very passionate about teaching and passing on my love and knowledge of music.
*** Lesson Details ***
I'm only accepting intermediate-advanced students at this time.
Lessons are tailored to each individual student and should be fun, inspiring, and challenging and we will learn from each other.
-Over all I will teach the student how to be a great musician. Not just a great drummer or flutist, but an overall musician who has awareness of his/her role in an ensemble as well as how their roles interact with others people's.
-We will set goals together whether that is preparing for a specific audition or event, or more long term goals.
-Lessons and topics covered are flexible and taught in ways that speak to the individual. I want to challenge my students but keep things fun and interesting for them.
-I help the students find answers by asking them questions and having them think critically. I will guide them to answer their own questions rather than hand the answers to them.
-I will cover basic theory with all students as it is the basis for good musical understanding.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Downstairs studio w/ drum set, keyboard, guitar, flute, and seating for parents
*** Travel Equipment ***
Students provide their own equipment.
*** Specialties ***
I received my BA in flute performance with honors. The focus of this degree was "classical" music from Baroque to 21st century music. During the time I received my degree I also studied jazz music and performance on drum set and composed for jazz ensembles and classical groups.
Barra is an excellent teacher!
Barra is an inspiring and excellent teacher. Not only is he a stellar musician in every aspect (performance, writing, creativity), but he is a patient and motivational teacher. He has the ability to work within a student's framework of understanding and teaches what a student wants to learn, a wonderful skill! Barra is an excellent communicator as well. I highly recommend him for music lessons of any kind, instrumental, theory, composition or any combination of desired musical skills.
My son has been taking lessons with Barra for several months now, and I can't recommend him more highly. He is talented; a very skilled and serious about music; he's a very talented teacher -- teaching technique and making it fun. He demonstrates the practical applications of what he's teaching, and engages 100%.
I recommend him without reservation!
Barra is an awesome instructor!
Barra is a patient, skillful, encouraging teacher, not only a wonderful, talented musician but also an exceptionally kind and compassionate person. Not every good musician is a good teacher, but Barra indeed is a good instructor. His passion is apparent to all and he brings out the same passion and dedication in those he teaches. He has the most excellent skill of working within a student's framework, taking into account both their desires and any limitations, and helping and supporting each student in what their goals are-what is most important to them, not necessarily to him, a very unique skill. I recommend Barra highly to musicians of any skill level!
