Levels taught:
Beginners typically take 60 minute classes once per week at a recurring time. Young children typically take half hour classes and older children, adult musicians and those on a budget typically take 45 minute classes. The most common lesson length to start with is 60 minutes, as the teacher will need to tune your instrument and help you get set up. Some students choose to take lessons twice per week when a concert is coming up, to catch up from a vacation or if they just want to make faster progress.

In class, you will learn new techniques, receive guidance on how to achieve the best sound possible and learn songs that you like and that interest you. You are expected to take this guidance and practice it thoroughly at home until you feel comfortable with it, so that when you are in class next, the teacher can move on to a new concept or skill which builds upon the skill practiced at home. They will only move you forward once you can do the more basic technique.

About Antoinette A.

In-Person lessons are back!

I am happy to say that not only do I love my job, but my passion in life has always been teaching. I spend 12-15 hours a day either teaching violin, educating myself on the newest methods and materials, or helping my students outside of class.

Your success means everything to me.

I pride myself on my attention to student progress, and your satisfaction with lessons and classes (translation: I've got to make sure you're having fun so we can keep up interest, and practice time in between lessons!)

Factually, I am sure there are a lot of great teachers on TakeLessons. They seem really nice! One thing I can tell you is that I am looking for students right now. My schedule is normally very full, but I have some drop-offs due to Covid and I am looking to fill some holes.

I am currently accepting Absolute Beginner violin and viola students.

I've been playing violin for 30 years, and I've been teaching for the last 11 of those years. I love every day at my job and love being able to bring the joy of violin to anyone who wants to learn it, no matter their age.

Finding a trained violinist and finding a good violin teacher are two very different things. When I see other teacher's profiles, they boast of the years of training they had. Anyone can learn to play (that is my philosophy), but it takes a love of teaching to really make a difference in someone's life.

With a love of teaching comes a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplish-able, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter of seconds, or minutes.

I respect others and what they feel and have to say. I treat others as I would want to be treated and lessons are always a pleasure to my students, because it is a pleasure for me to teach them.

I have been playing for over 29 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. Real-world experience is vital to understanding what people want to listen to.

When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is most important to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.

Lessons are fun, because they are productive. I know your happiness is directly related to your success, which is why I guarantee it (as long as you practice). You will walk away being able to do something.

Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me a song you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

I rent out violins of all sizes.

If you have any questions, I am happy to answer them. You can use the contact button on this website for any queries.
Thanks for giving me a few minutes of your time.

Stay Safe,

Antoinette is, by far, the best music instructor that I have ever hired. Music has always been a part of my life. As a child, I took piano lessons for years and continued on and off through college. As a complete novice to the violin, I was nervous to begin such a challenging instrument as an adult hobby. Antoinette is encouraging, intelligent and incredibly skilled. Her calm demeanor and patience is vital to one's success. She focuses on the building blocks to a successful technique with ease. I am incredibly grateful to Antoinette for reminding me of how enjoyable music can be. I look forward to our weekly sessions around my busy work schedule. Her location is conveniently located within walking distance from the subway in NYC.

I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age.

Antoinette was patient and effective during my first lesson. As an adult, having never taken a violin lesson in my life, I was nervous. But Antoinette has confidence in me and I am looking forward to more lessons with her!

Great teacher and very passionate! She's patient, positive, responds promptly when I message her with any questions or rescheduling conflict. Great at explaining techniques. I could not have asked for a better Violin teacher.

When searching for a violin teacher, I researched and reached out to a place down the street from me, and it took them over a week to just give me a quote on how much lessons are and when I could schedule them. I decided to do more research and compare. I contacted a few others and then I contacted Antoinette and she responded within a day. Even though she is much farther from my home, I decided to go with her because I knew that she would be a teacher who cared. And I was right :)

Very happy with my lessons. I have taken a little hiatus and now back and buying the packaged deals for more lessons with Ms. Addy

Excellent teacher. I have a little musical background since I play acoustic guitar, but this is the first time playing the violin. Antoinette is great at communicating and prioritizing what is and is not important from the mass of new information presented to a new student. Definitely a fun learning experience, highly recommended!!

We began with two lessons for our 7 year old daughter, and Antoinette has been a great sync in terms of understanding her ability while pushing her limits. She is patient with, relating with her as a peer, while being her teacher and guide. We just signed up for more lessons!

Antoinette is a great teacher who has helped me to grow out of a complete beginner. She is very attentive to her students and has assisted me in finding my weaknesses to improve with each lesson. I am pleased with the time spent with her as a student and would not hesitate to recommend her.

Miss Antoinette is wonderful. She worked with my 3 year old for beginner lessons (resting position, listening and following directions). My daughter adores her. We live in NJ, so the commute to manhattan became too much for my daughter. But the experience was worth it, she learned a great deal from Miss Antoinette who was patient, accommodating, and fun.

Antoinette is a really friendly, approachable teacher. I was brand new to the violin and she's been extremely helpful so far! She rented me a violin and I was playing by the end of our first lesson. I'd definitely recommend her to both new and experienced musicians.

Antoinette is a gifted teacher. I learned so much in my first lesson with her! She explains everything so clearly. It'll be easy to remember her words and imagery as I practice during the week.

The NYC Violin Studio

I am the head of a private NYC violin studio in Midtown West. I host online classes where students can make incredible music. Pre-Covid: I have a home studio in Midtown West. The studio has a waiting area, a weighted keyboard, an amp (for electric violin), all sizes of violins to rent, a library of sheet music and technique books and a computer/printer for on-the-spot sheet music requests. The studio is located across the street from the ACE subway line, and is close to the NQRW, 123 and 7 line at the Times Squre 42nd street stop. The BDFM line is one block east. In this neighborhood you will find lots of places to eat, a playground/park down the street, coffee shops, bubble tea and of course Times Square. There are also several CitiBike stations nearby, namely the station at Port Authority, which is less than one block away.
