I have spent 37 years teaching Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade music, using an active program of singing, moving, playing, improvising and performing. I follow the principles of the Orff-Schulwerk process of teaching children, but also draw upon my technical and artistic background as a performer: Voice, Cello, Recorder (all voices), Native American-style Flute, Piano, Guitar and the Bass Viola da gamba (I teach all of these privately, as well, up through adult learners). Skills and repertoire are taught with an Historic and Cultural sensibility, especially drawing tunes and activities from the cultural and personal interest of my students. If your children are home-schooled, I would love to work with them and keep the music curriculum going!

About Anne R.

I love working with young students, to get them started on the path to becoming Musical People. Whether I'm teaching them to play one specific instrument, helping them develop their singing voices, or leading them through a performance-based curriculum based upon The National Standards of Music Education, my goal is to give each student the ability to become independently musical. I have Bachelor and Master degrees in Music Performance and Pedagogy (Voice), a Master Certificate from the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (music education), and a career that includes teaching full-time and performing in professional venues. I am a Mezzo-Soprano (Early Music and Baroque Performance Practice), and I have also freelanced throughout my career on Cello, Recorder, Bass Viola da gamba, and Native American-style Flute. I also teach beginning piano. My goal is to reach children who are not in a school where they can take music lessons, and to offer private lessons and group zoom lessons to help them reach their full potential as musicians for life.

Music Specialist
Aug 2002 - Aug 2019

Institute of Advanced Montessori Studies

The Barrie School has a summer Institute to train Montessori teachers, and I have taught the Music portion of the Primary Montessori curriculum (occurring over one week in August) but I have shared this position with other Orff-Schulwerk teachers who expressed the desire to gain experience working with adults, to give the Institute fresh perspectives and ideas, and quite honestly to give myself time with my family. I have not taught every year, but I have a great time when I do teach the adult students in this wonderful program.

The Washington Opera/Freelance

I was a Union Chorister in the Washington National Opera as a Mezzo-Soprano. My position consisted of rehearsals several evenings per week, with two weekends of performances for the operas. Singing, dancing, and acting while wearing fabulous costumes was a great gig. I have been a contracted singer/cantor/cellist/Bass Viol performer in churches throughout my life, including weekly services, weddings, funerals and special services. I have also sung professionally with Early Music and Chamber Music groups, in local performance venues.
