I am a Mathemusician - a math and test prep tutor and performing musician. :D I have tutored and taught students for the past 9 years, and have extensive experience with online lessons over the past year.
Musical skills offered: Songwriting, Voice, Guitar, Baritone Ukulele, Tenor Ukulele, Music theory, Logic Recording, Live Looping
Academic skills offered: Algebra I/II, Geometry, PreCalculus, ACT/SAT test prep, GRE test prep, GED test prep, essay writing, and more.
My tutoring experience spans 9 years, nearly 1000 hours with Wyzant students, and almost 4 times as many tutoring hours with students at The Portland Tutoring Collective. I have coached students to perfect 800s on all sections of the SAT, and high 30s on the ACT.
I specialize in the following subjects:
- SAT, ACT, and GRE test preparation
- Algebra I/II
I enjoy tailoring my tutoring to the individual needs of each student. My students have attended public, private, charter, and home schools, and I have worked with students with various learning differences, including ADHD, processing delays, and dyslexia.
Here is a glowing testimonial!
(I have many others - Wyzant only lets us include one)
"Thank you for your wonderful help with both of our children- Catherine improved on her ACT test scores from a 19 to a 25; she received many great offers and chose University of Portland. With the scholarship she earned we are well below the cost of a state university.
Marty did even better; going from a 17 to a 25- he has now been accepted to all 8 of his schools - and has received offers totaling over $80,000.
We have one more for in a few years!! Your help and expertise has helped not only our children but us as well!"
More about me:
I have a bachelor's of science in molecular biology from the University of California, Davis, and completed two years of graduate studies in environmental microbiology at UC Santa Barbara. During college, I tutored fellow undergraduates in biology, biochemistry, and genetics. After my studies, I traveled to Central America and volunteered to help homeless teens living in a group home in Nicaragua.
After I left grad school for medical reasons, I discovered private tutoring was a great match for my skills, expertise, and passions. I truly enjoy working with students individually to help them surmount the many challenges school places in their paths.
I moved to Portland nine years ago, and I have been tutoring and teaching ever since. In addition to tutoring, I worked for the SUN program in Portland tutoring in their after-school program. I developed and taught the Magnificent Microbes and Introduction to Biotechnology class for Saturday Academy during the summers of 2009, 2010, and 2011. I also teach microbiology, forensic science, and marine biology for Saturday Academy and local elementary schools.
I am also an accomplished musician (voice, various instruments) and I would love to work with more students who are studying music theory and voice!
I look forward to working with your student! Please contact me if you have any questions.
NOTE: Due to increased interest in my services, I now offer tutoring services online. I am happy to provide a free 15 min demo of the virtual tutoring platform. I do not travel to students' homes.
Annie is a wonderful instructor bringing humor, creativity and patience to her tutoring. Our discussions are engaging and have introduced me to thinking differently about music. Annie's knowledge and passion are a must have in any instructor!
