My name is Anna Y., and I have been teaching private piano lessons across the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States since 2005. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree (hons) from Queen’s University Belfast (Northern Ireland), and certifications from ABRSM (the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music), Berklee College of Music and NSAI (Nashville Songwriter’s Association International). I am also affiliated with BMI (Broadcast Music Inc) and Taxi Music Independent A&R company, working as an independent songwriter.
Two things characterize my teaching style: encouragement and flexibility. I believe in “mentoring” my students - not just teaching. My students can expect to excel in an encouraging environment. I am passionate about developing well-rounded students - students who are equipped with the skills and techniques that will fuel their own musical goals. I emphasize a strong musical foundation and great technique, while exploring many different genres and musical outlets. Above all, I love mentoring my students and helping them find their "thing"!
To this end, I teach a wide range of styles in a variety of different genres - Classical, Contemporary, Pop, Blues, Singer-songwriter. I also do a lot of chord work with my students (including the Nashville Number system). I have found that students who develop versatility as musicians feel equipped and empowered to go after their own musical dreams - whatever that might look like.
I recommend age 7 to start, but I will take younger students on a case-by-case basis. If you have any questions, or wonder if you/your student is ready for private lessons, please reach out and we can chat about your goals!

I have been teaching private piano lessons across the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States since 2005. I endeavor to instill a solid musical foundation and correct technique while helping students find their creative voice. I teach Classical and Contemporary Piano, including chord work. This results in versatile, well-rounded students who can play music in a variety of styles - whether that involves reading music, or playing songs by ear. My specialty is helping students excel in their technique, regardless of the kind of music they choose to study. The way I see it, the notes don't change - but they way you play them does!
In addition to teaching music at ROOTS Academy, I also held a role as the Music Program Coordinator. This involved overseeing the whole student body - approximately 300 students. A large part of my job included facilitating lessons between mentors and students, developing our programs and maintaining a high level of education across the board. Our goal was that our students would have an excellent experience while studying with us - both in the quality of teaching and in being part of a creative, performing community.
At ROOTS Academy I taught beginner, intermediate, and advanced piano students between the ages of 5 and 60 years old. ROOTS Academy is located just outside of Nashville, Tennessee, and as such there is a huge demand for excellent musical education in a variety of genres. My students trained in classical principles, excellent technique, music theory, ear training, and chord work (including the Nashville Number System). I mostly taught within the Classical, Contemporary, Pop, Blues, and Singer-Songwriter genres, and mentored some of these students in the art of songwriting. Curriculum included Alfred, Faber and Bastien.
TAXI is an Independent A&R company, based in Calabasas, CA, that was founded in 1992 by music veteran Michael Laskow with the intent of helping songwriters, artists, bands, and composers get their music heard by record labels, music publishers, and supervisors of film/TV projects.
The Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) is the world’s largest not-for-profit songwriters trade association. Established in 1967, the membership of more than 5,000 active and pro members spans the United States and six other countries. NSAI is dedicated to protecting the rights of and serving aspiring and professional songwriters in all genres of music.
One of three United States performing rights organizations, along with ASCAP and SESAC. It collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed. In FY 2013, BMI collected more than $944 million in licensing fees and distributed $814 million in royalties.
