    About Andrew W.

Andrew is a professional musician, composer, and educator who has been performing with an eclectic mix of bands for over ten years. After earning his Bachelor's Degree in Music at the University of North Texas, where he studied jazz performance, composition, arranging, and theory, Andrew became a visible member of the Dallas music scene. As the bassist for Shanghai 5, a gypsy-jazz/lounge-rock band, he won the Dallas Observer Music Award for Best Jazz Ensemble 2007. Teaching has continued to be one of Andrew's passions; it is a way to continually approach music with fresh eyes and guide fellow music fans toward a deeper and more enjoyable connection to it. *** Lesson Details *** Since I teach piano, guitar, and bass, I'll describe what any student can expect. I've taught students of every age from five to sixty-five, so I understand when adults are simply too busy to practice--I'll practice with you for a lesson! or when a child has difficulty focusing--we'll do more activities and avoid the boring stuff as much as possible. I have a talent for getting through to people and discovering how they learn best. I am very laid back and extremely patient...this stuff takes time to sink in. So, whether you want to play fast, simply strum chords, lay down a grooving' bass line, learn your favorite songs, improve your technique, or be able to name all those complicated jazz chords, I'll help you get there! *** Studio Equipment *** A dedicated music room filled with instruments, oodles of music books, recording equipment, a stereo, and lots of sunlight! *** Travel Equipment *** Students need to bring their own instrument, (I have an amplifier for students using electric guitar/bass). I will provide a music stand, metronome, and sheet music/other materials for lessons, but encourage students to acquire these materials in order to practice and perform on their own. *** Specialties *** Possess a thorough knowledge of music theory and advanced harmonic concepts. Adept at teaching improvisation on upright/electric bass, guitar, and piano Will strongly encourage note reading, in addition to tablature, for guitar/bass, however, will honor students' requests.
