My goal is to help you define realistic goals and then, how to obtain them. If you are unsure of what your goals are, that's okay too. We can cover the basics and in time, find out what your musical interests are. However, I expect my students to work towards improving their skills by practicing a little each day, or as I like to say students need to be hitting the woodshed.
My lessons are tailored toward each student's goals but I always include certain topics. The core of my teaching involves a clear understanding of rhythm, scales, chords, and music notation. In addition, I enjoy music theory and always work it into my lesson. Personally, knowing the form and function, or the why of song structure is important for musicians to understand.
In addition to theory, we will work on songs that interest my students, and at a level, they can manage. Finally, I enjoy teaching all ages! No matter if the student is 9 years old or 90 years old I think we can grow together while
studying the lovely world of music!
About Andrew M.
Hello!
My name is Andrew M. and I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Music at Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan. During my undergraduate, I became a proficient composer, arranger, and performer. I perform solo piano at wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, and private events. I also, perform with a trio at various restaurants, weddings, and special events. The trio consists of a bass player, a drummer, and myself (piano/keyboard). My experience has allowed me to understand what knowledge is necessary for students who aim to play solo and/or with others. I have been teaching piano for about 5 years now and I have had a number of students. More importantly, I have had plenty of students who stayed with me for many years. In addition to playing piano, I can also play the accordion, some drums, and I am familiar with the guitar. I am happy to teach the basics of the piano to students as they start out. When working with more advanced students with I teach advanced studies in jazz, blues, and bossa nova piano techniques.
When I am not playing or teaching piano I enjoy fishing, cooking, and spending time with the family. In addition, I am studying a great deal myself! I am currently enrolled in a Doctorate of Audiology program at Wayne State. The combination of teaching music and learning audiology has led me to think of music and sound in new and interesting ways. If you or someone you know is interested in learning about music through piano I would be delighted to hear from you.
Thanks!

I've been taking lessons from Andrew for almost 2 years now. He's a great teacher; he's patient, encouraging and accommodating. He builds a strong foundation for playing and understanding music by focusing on the fundamentals first and foremost. I highly recommend him as a teacher!

I came to Andrew as an intermediate-to-advanced level pianist looking to learn jazz piano. Andrew does a great job pacing his lessons to push new ideas and techniques without being overwhelming. He will also relate the techniques he teaches to how he plays in real life, which is extremely helpful. Andrew is very easy to get along with and is also very responsive between lessons. I'd recommend him for any skill level
