Hi, my name is Andy, and I am a Music/Composition major currently at American River College, where I have studied composition and music theory with jazz pianist Joe Gilman for 2 years. I have also tutored the Basic Musicianship class there for 3 semesters, where they like to call me resident "music theory nerd".
I also studied Creative Writing for 2 years, and won the 2008 Newsom Prize for Poetry, and have been published several times in the Poet's Corner of the Sacramento News & Review. In addition, I am a seasoned actor in live and musical theatre. Previous roles include Beadle Bamford in Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, Ezra Chater in Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, and most recently the Blind Hermit in Young Frankenstein.
My teaching style is friendly and sympathetic; my passion is to help students feel free and able to pursue outlets for their creativity. I like to boil it down to the essentials, and I believe you learn best by just DOING. Practice doesn't always make perfect--but it sure helps. :)
