My goal is not so much teaching one how to play an instrument, but more broadly, to help one cultivate their own living musicality. My own areas of practice, study, and specialization are in free improvisation, sound art/Sonic sculpture, conceptual performance, and songwriting/composition. I've explored a vast number of different styles and genre. Jazz, classical, folk and bluegrass, spirituals, blues, punk rock, contemporary ghospel, electronic dance and ambient, to name a few... I love working with kids, I love teaching any age any skill level, I promise to listen, and fine tune our lesson to fit your specific personality and needs.

About Andrew D.

In practice over 12 years. studying the intersections of tradition music theory, performance, conceptual art , and free improvisation. I love teaching music and have been doing it since 2017. A musical practice is an opportunity for incredible self growth. And an exercise for our minds and awareness.

I am most technically proficient with guitar (electric/acoustic/classical), but enjoy teaching many subjects and instruments. I've worked with students ranging from age 3 to age 62 teaching piano, guitar, voice, and composition.

as a songwriter and recording/performing artist, my taste is very eclectic and inspired by classical, jazz, the avant garde, ,pop and folk music... I'm confident, versatile and comfortable playing and performing with most instruments. throughout my experience in this field music has enriched my life and the lives of those around me. It takes time, a lot of practice, research, experimentation, and collaboration to get the most out it and I believe in the cultivation of a living musicality.

My approach emphasizes the importance of process, exploration and discovery, as well as the study and analysis of traditional concepts. I propose, active listening to be the simplest form of composition. And as musicians an active ear is central, not only in practice, but generally, for creative evolution and innovation.

I've found the most effective methods effectively balance theory and practice.

I believe the biggest inhibitor to growth, musical or otherwise, is a lack of confidence. A lack that comes from too much pressure to produce idealized results-- fear of mistakes...

I embrace the developmental process,
I work with every student to make each lesson plan efficient, meaningful and inspiring.

Flender

Flender is a new project started by Kalen Rowe and myself. In contrast to our previous project KA, Flender maintains a bit of the improvisational/experimental feel, but has become more and more composed. we've released 3 studio albums, 1 live album, and various jam compilations. describing the sound or genre of the band, Ive jokingly called it Jazzical music because of its long irregular form, thematic elements, and improvisational technique, but since its inception it has evolved into a more regular pop/rock form while maintaining its own unique harmonic structure and sonic qualities. We still improvise as a band in order to write our songs.

KA

KA is an inclusive, improvisational performance entity created by my friend , independent publisher Kalen Rowe, and myself. The project is geared toward total creative exploration, free improvisation, experimental techniques and concepts. The goal is to put ourselves out of our comfort zone and learn how to listen and use whatever we may have to create unique performative experiences. changing band line-up every show, using the performative space as its own resonant instrument, home made instruments, spoken word, video and projection... KA regularly performs in houston, tx.

La Playa

La playa was a community run art space, performance venue, recording studio in 3rd ward that is free and open to the public. An ethnomusicological hub that held open mic nights every week and offered free recording. I took residence there for a year and did everything from recording and production for local artists, to curating art in the gallery, to organizing open mic nights, shows and events.
