I am a professional violist who has been teaching strings for nearly a decade, and I have been performing on the viola for over two decades. I use a body-oriented approach that helps violists play with ease and artistry. This approach includes a mix of Alexander Technique, body mapping, Karen Tuttle Coordination, Suzuki pedagogy, and my own curriculum around somatic movement education. In addition with ear training, note reading, playing by ear (or, active transcribing), and improvising, I help students learn jazz tunes, their favorite songs, and classical pieces, no matter the difficulty. We work with the Suzuki books and other training materials from my library. For the advanced student, I invite them to bring pieces they're working on, so that I may help them build their repertoire and prepare for auditions. Most importantly, I guide students on how to solve problems that show up in their practice and how to become their own teachers. Are you ready to get started?

About Anastasia M.

I am a singer, violist, voice coach, music educator, somatic movement educator, and interdisciplinary artist. I hold two degrees: a Bachelor of Science from the University of Vermont and a Bachelor of Music from the UNC School of the Arts.

Born and raised in Memphis, TN, I grew up singing gospel and R&B. I also learned how to be a musician on the viola through the public schools. I played in Memphis Youth Symphony and started gigging around town when I was 14 years old. When I left home, I pursued a diverse education in animal studies, environmental studies, and music.

Eventually, I built a career in music and education. I perform regularly with Asheville Symphony and as the regular featured musician for the Asheville Storytelling GrandSlam and the Moth Radio Hour. I have also studied several modalities in voice training, including Estill Voice and the McClosky technique.

I am an Alexander Technique teacher-in-training. My memberships include the National Association for Teachers of Singing, the Voice and Speech Trainers Association, the Voice Foundation, and the Association for Body Mapping Education.

I live on the ceded land of the Cherokee in Asheville, NC with my loving husband and our two dogs. My pronouns are she/her/hers.

An Ya is an amazing musician. She doesn't only teach people like me how to sing. She's out there in the real world... playing her viola and singing in front of crowds throughout the region. In my experience with An Ya, she adapted my vocal lessons to work specifically on areas where I was struggling. She always seem to drill down to the real root of the vocal problem I was having and helped me improve. I wasn't able to stick with lessons as long as I had hoped, due to conflicts with my work schedule. However, I came away from my time with An Ya with better control over my diaphragm and a stronger "head" voice. Thanks to An Ya, I'm a better singer than I was before.
