My name is Amy Helfrich, and I recently retired as a soloist dancer at American Contemporary Ballet. I have a BFA in ballet from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I took four years of courses learning how to teach ballet to students of all ages and levels. I have been teaching both children and adults sine 2013, and I am currently looking to teach more students of any level!
My students can expect to improve after just one class, and will continue to improve more and more with every week. Every student has their own strengths and weaknesses and I will help with their confidence in their own dancing. I believe that dance is a wonderful art form that can be taught to anyone at any age. For younger students I will focus on imagery and making each step more fun with games, for older students I will focus on the anatomy of the body and why each step should be performed a certain way. It’s such a satisfying workout as you can see every little improvement after each class.
I also teach a barre workout class which is a blend of Pilates and ballet. It’s less of the artistry in ballet, and more of exercises that target the little muscles that you don’t even know you have! With this class, you’ll see a change in your body in just a few classes.
I trained professionally in classical ballet under the Vaganova method from age 5 to 18 at Manassas Ballet Academy in Northern Virginia. While training there, I had the opportunity to compete in an international competion (YAGP) where I placed in the top 12 five years in a row, and received numerous full ride scholarships to several of the top ballet schools in the country.
After high school, I went on to further my studies in ballet at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. While there, I spent four years intensively learning to teach ballet to all levels. I am very comfortable teaching any level of dancer and am confident that I can coach any student to where they want to be!
Once I graduated from school, I immediately moved to LA to dance for American Contemporary Ballet. While with the company, I have performed numerous soloist roles such as Lilac Fairy from Sleeping Beauty and Snow Queen in the Nutcracker.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you become a better dancer!
Amy was one of my favorite teachers at home. I was so lucky to have her help me in Ballet, she really taught me technique and a lot about artistry. Her class made me so excited for ballet and I’m still doing it today because of her!!
Let me tell you, I am a 65 years young. My doctor recommended I pick up some extra aerobic activity and exercise, and I decided to give ballet a try because I never go into that as a teen. A friend of mine recommended Amy to me, and I'm glad she did! Although my skills were far from advanced, Amy made me feel like a principle dancer. She focused on what I needed to improve, while maintaining an effective pace so we could get to all the movement. I love my lessons with Amy and definitely recommend her every time!+ Read More
Amy came to my home and did a private ballet lesson with my 5 year old daughter, and it was a great experience. She’s absolutely great with kids! She moved the lesson along at a perfect pace for a 5 year old. My daughter had so much fun, and can’t wait for amy to come back!!+ Read More
