    About Allison S.

In the classroom, I have inspired literally hundreds of students to write - and to write well! - using the tools of my own curriculum, my love of writing, and my (quirky) sense of humor. I am not a teacher who happens to like writing; I am a writer who became a teacher. And that has made all the difference. As a former English teacher, I've also been credited with helping my students love to read. I use a unique and engaging way of analyzing literature to facilitate understanding. I take enormous pride in the success stories of my alums, and their esteem for me and my program. My students go on to become acclaimed writers and deep thinkers in college (sending me updates on their professors' impressed reactions to their papers). And three of my students completed 30,000-word novels under my guidance (*for NaNoWriMo). Are you looking for support that will help you to develop and grow as a writer, while also inspiring self-confidence in your craft? Are you seeking tools for literary analysis and reading comprehension? Or do you need support writing your first novel, screenplay, or short story? My alums call me "that once in a lifetime teacher," and I am confident that I can help you! Until this past June, I was an English teacher in a prestigious private school on the westside of Los Angeles. I left teaching to pursue a writing career, but am pleased I can use my skills and experience to reach out and help others "remotely." In addition to being a teacher, I also recently completed the world famous Writing Lab at The Groundlings. I write and perform comedy here in L.A....which means my lessons are entertaining and engaging!

    Experience

    English Teacher

    Sep, 2004 - Jun, 2011

The International School of Los Angeles

I started in the elementary school, but was moved up to the middle school (at the request of the families whose children were moving up to the middle school). After three years, I was then promoted to the high school, where I taught 9th and 10th grade English.

    English Teacher/Language Arts Specialist

    Sep, 2011 - Jun, 2017

    The Village School

As the sixth-grade English teacher, I created and developed the middle-school Writing Curriculum. I was known for my dynamic, creative, and engaging lessons. And for developing strong and confident writers.

    Journalism Teacher

    Jun, 2008 - Aug, 2012

Leysin American School in Leysin, Switzerland

During the summers, I was hired to create and to teach a new Journalism course for high school students at this international boarding school. My students created a weekly, multi-page newspaper and became proficient writers.
