    About Alexandra O.

My tutoring experience started in college, as I was on the teacher education track. From there I lived abroad in Switzerland and then Korea where I taught classes and tutored in English. Since my return, I have been involved in an educational movement. I helped open a Waldorf inspired charter which places equal emphasis on the academic, social and emotional components of child development. In Waldorf schools, academics are heavily influenced by the arts, including painting, music, poetry, and oral story telling. As a tutor, I take this same approach. When a student comes to me, I discover what hasn't been working for them and what will. Using different techniques such as movement, songs, poetry and rhythmic counting I may reintroduce math facts or phonetics. If an older student is having trouble memorizing or using certain math formulas we may start with earlier foundational concepts so to give the student a stronger base, rather than just shoving them forward in hopes that they will "catch-up." If a student is missing a certain skill, it must first be diagnosed and met before one can move on with confidence. Most importantly, I understand that each student is different, in temperament and personality. This plays a significant roll in how I conduct each lesson. Lessons are child-centered, meaning that the goal with each student is to meet them where they are and help them grow. I want to work with parents on the same goal that we both want our children/students to grow into happy and successful adults in whatever they do. I work with the student in hopes that they become life-long learners. I have a bachelors in Human Development. I have a Multiple Subjects Teaching credential. I have a Waldorf certificate from a 3 year teacher-program. I currently teach Third Grade full-time. Looking forward to working with you and your family. Warmly, Alexandra *** Lesson Details *** As stated in my bio, each student is different. I do not use a base curriculum, rather, I select from a plethora of diverse strategies. You might see oral story-telling, memorization, a geometrical drawing to help with times tables, songs to work with phonetics, vocabulary, comprehension, even time-telling! The student and I might work on a relevant ongoing project, a poem or even a painting. Games and movement could be necessary to instill basic math facts, or reading skills. There are numerous possibilities, but after assessments are done, an overarching plan is established with the student and family, and from there, we review as we progress. I expect my students to respect me, themselves, and the work they do. Through engaging in a meaningful way with my students, I hope that they are re-inspired and eager to learn. *** Specialties *** Waldorf methods, Multiple Intelligences, Positive Discipline training,
