I grew up in a household where I was mainly raised by my 1st generation Taiwanese-American mom and spent a lot of time around my Taiwanese family. As such, knowing and learning Mandarin Chinese was really important to me; I wanted to be able to communicate with my family in their native tongue. I am happy that so many people today have an interest in Chinese culture and the Mandarin language. I think Mandarin lesson with me will be unique, because I understand how hard it can be to learn a new language and the difficulties associated with it. Even with my family, I can understand when they speak in Mandarin; however, when they speak in their Taiwanese dialect, I cannot completely understand and my learning of the language has hit a lot of hurdles. So, I am hoping that I can do my best to help any beginners start off their Chinese journey, or intermediate levels students improve upon their current skills.

About Alexander S.

I started to, formally, tutor when I was in high school; I was recommended by my anatomy teacher at the time to tutor another student who needed help. In terms of informal tutoring, when I was growing up I would help my friend's younger siblings in subjects such as math or science. In college, I would often times read my classmates papers and give them advice or help them improve upon their written work.

I found it to be really rewarding, on my part, when the student I tutored grew to have a better understanding of the concept. Not only that, but they seemed to have gained more confidence in class. After that, I would try to offer whoever needed it tutoring. I never found it to be monotonous or dull; rather, I found it exciting and I could tell that the people I was tutoring really became engaged in the subject in question.

My tutoring style is first to try and get a grasp of what the student understands and what they are struggling with. Usually, by using this method, it can help me to find out how exactly to tackle the problem at hand. After all, different problems call for different approaches. In general, I tend to be a very receptive tutor; I try to tailor the tutoring experience to what the student them self feels works best for them.
